I walked the Camino Frances in April/May 2003 from St Jean PdP to Santiago. At St Jean I was advised not to cross the Pyrenees because there was too much snow. I later heard that someone who ignored this advice found the scenery stunning, since there was hardly anyone else and the snow was beautiful and untrampled and the skies were blue. I was quite jealous until I heard about somebody else who had died of hypothermia, but some other time completely.
Anyway, that is why I walked mainly along the road from St Jean to Roncesvalles, but taking the short cuts maked with the yellow arrows whenever I saw them.
What I would really like to know is, what is the distance that I walked on that first day? The only guides I have read give the distance over the Pyrenees via Honto.
Thanks
