Does anyone have access to the SJPdP statistics on pilgrim numbers? I'm curious if there is an actual "best day of the week" to start in SJPdP in May in order to remain clear of a bubble (for the first few days that is). I've heard anecdotal evidence that some days are noticeably busier/more-crowded than others.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Many pilgrims, especially Europeans, tend to start on a weekend day or Monday/Friday to save holiday/vacation days. In my experience starting on Monday to Wednesdays (provided it is not a holiday!) in SJPdP helps to avoid the bubble. If you want to stay in Orrisson (reservation needed!) I would, ideally, start Tuesday in SJPdP, stay in Orrisson, arrive in Roncesvalles on Wednesday and arrive just before the weekend in Pamplona to avoid those that start there. Buen Camino, SY

We started this year on May 27, a Friday, from SJPP, stayed the night in Orisson - what a blessing as we met so many of our Camino Family member those first 2 nights - and walked pretty much without crowds at all until we hit Sarria.

If you are looking at 2017 then be aware that May 1st, which is a public holiday, falls on a Monday. That will be a busy weekend so best to start just afterwards. Even 2nd or 3rd would be OK IMO

May 8th is also a public holiday, as is Ascension Day (25th May in 2017).
