okay-- This is probably crazy. But I was mucking out the stalls tonight (we own horses) and talking to my equine pals and thought, "Hmmm... if I walked with a donkey I'd have a pal, and many of these gîtes have a place for a burro." I admit, I've never worked with a donkey, but I've worked with stubborn equines of the larger sort (a certain big bossy belgian mare comes to mind...). Has anyone done this? I have read it is more possible in France than in Spain.

thanks--

We saw a few people with donkeys on this route. If you get MiamMiam Dodo guide for the Le Puy route, it indicates which gites will take donkeys or horses. We stayed in a couple that did.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I didn't use a donkey, I walked by myself. But my family owns two donkeys, so I'm a little bit into the subject.
If you want to rent a donkey in Le Puy, have a look here: http://www.ot-lepuyenvelay.fr/que-f...es-sur-saint-jacques-de-compostelle-a108.html
or you might call the Office Tourisme in Le Puy directly, my experience is that you get better and more up-to-date information when calling.

The Tim Moore book is fun, I enjoyed it, too.

I did meet Jacques Couteau, the author of the famous MiamMiamDoDo guide on the way. We spent a night in the same gite near Lectoure. He was a great guy, actually, he works a lot with donkeys and did quite some longer walks with them. See his site at http://www.bourricot.com/ . If you need any specific advice on using a donkey on the GR65, he's the guy to talk to.

Have fun!
