Time of past OR future Camino
Future: May 2022
Greetings,
My friend and I are starting the Camino from St Jean Pied de Port on May 18th. We have been planning this for four years after a trip to Santiago de Compostela where we stood and watched people arriving from the Camino for two hours and we’re overwhelmed with emotions. We decided that day we would do it for our 60th birthdays. So it is happening this May. We are so excited to begin. I live reading everyone’s posts. Buen Camino to those of you en route right now!

Welcome to the Forum.
I did the Frances from SJPP for my 60th. The experience was absolutely soul captivating. I've lived lessons from that pilgrimage almost every day since, and I've decided to do it again for my 70th next June.
Buen camino. My advice? Train first, get some Injiji socks and a neck bag.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hola Lisa. I'll be ahead of you by about a week, but plan on taking it slow and adding in rest days. I'll keep an eye out for you two. With luck we'll be able to celebrate our birthdays with a glass or two of plonk.

Start hiking the hills in the San Diego countryside! Unlike your home location, the Camino Frances is no walk on the beach. Buen Camino and an early happy birthday!

We are currently doing a 10 mile hike each week with 5 mile hikes 4 days a week. In January we plan on hiking 12 mile hikes twice a week. Thanks for the birthday wish!

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

What is a neck bag? What do you suggest for training?

Happy planning and training, @lcarneyfarwell . For training, the best thing you can do is to walk as much as you can. A few weeks before you leave, check that you can walk 20 km two days in a row, wearing and carrying exactly what you plan to take. If you can do that without too much trouble, you should be fine.

It is an experience that I really value, but it is not "life-transforming" for most of us. Don't let expectations get in the way of a great experience. :)

I'm from Alberta, Canada. Neck bag...wrong term...it's a passport/credential/wallet you wear around your neck and it hangs down under your shirt. C Clearly is right, but the experiences merit some great memories that I revisit quite often. Some of my camino family have remained friends a decade after my first camino and that is at least 'affirming'.
