Walk Camino in May (2015)
To start in SJPdP where should I fly from the US. I want to visit southern Spain at the end . Should I go to Santiago and then get transportation to SJPdP ?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Europe Map.JPG

This map shows SJPdP and Santiago in relation to major airports used by most people to access the camino.

The big deal is getting to Europe. Within Europe, transportation links using discount airlines, trains, and buses are very good.

The closest airports to SJPdP are Biarritz France (BIQ) (with flights from London and Paris) and San Sebastian Spain (EAS) (with flights from Barcelona and Madrid).

Santiago airport Labacolla (SCQ) has flights to London, Paris, Madrid, and others.

You need to think about how to get there and how to get home.

Hi Stephen!

This year I am starting in Pamplona so the traveling is a little easier.... However, in 2012, I flew from California to Dublin (which is where I booked my round trip flight from this time as well- the flights are always the cheapest) then I booked an interEurope flight on Aer Lingus to Bordeaux and then took a train to Bayonne and on to SJPdP.

After the Camino I spent time in Barcelona then Florence and Rome, from where I flew back to CA. So my first round trip flight I booked was a multicity on kayak.com- San Francisco to Dublin and Rome to San Francisco. I would recommend finding the cheap long haul flight options and then check out the inter Europe flights on Easyjet, Ryanair, Iberia, and Aer Lingus.

I would also recommend not making any flight plans for after Santiago yet, just wait until you are getting closer to the end of your Camino and know when you will actually be arriving in Santiago, and then look into making your plans to go south.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

I flew transatlantic into Barcelona, took the bus (4 hours) to Pamplona, and a shared van ride to SJPDP. I was at SJPDP by 5pm, which gave me plenty time (late May) to visit the Office of the Pilgrim to get the first stamp, walk around this gorgeous town, visit The Citadelle, and get water, fruits, and snacks for the next day. I don't think it could had been easier.

At the conclusion, from Santiago you can get a cheap flight to Malaga via Iberia, Vueling, Air Europa, etc...I met many people on the Camino who were scrambling with trying to change dates on already purchased flight tickets. May be a better idea to buy an open jaw, wait, and avoid change fees. Southern Spain is very well connected, specially since Madrid is a good hub for both trains and buses.

Buen Camino.
