I arrive St Jean Pied de Port on September 13, 2013 to beginning walking. Any suggestions on where to stay on the first night?

There are two refugios between SJPdP and Roncesvalles, in Huntto and Orrison, both need to be booked in advance. Otherwise there are plenty of places to stay in SJPdP and the pilgrims office there will help you to find a bed. Buen Camino! SY
