Hi, thanks for your reply. I won't be wearing pants so this is my reason for just wearing long tights and shorts over the top. I expect like you say I won't need them most of the time but I did experience doing the Primitivo a couple of years ago being very cold starting at 6am and walking in the mountains when it was windy and raining. So it's more a backup for those occasions when it might get colder and also a lightweight solution to taking pants. I've read the Patagonia Capilene Lightweight bottoms are recommended for cooler weather and weigh only 3 oz, 85 g. It seems the average weight for leggings is 200g but trying to shave as much of my pack base weight to 1 kg as possible. I've had a look at REI but there not very available here in the UK, so my first choice was Decathlon.Personally I don't think you need anything. Of course it does depend on your tolerance for cold. I have walked in Winter with layers and a down jacket. Temperatures some mornings were -3 or -4. I was shedding layers within 15 or 20 minutes. If I were you I would get something like this:
REI is the American equivalent of Decathlon.REI Co-op Lightweight Base Layer Bottoms - Men's | REI Co-op
From morning's first frosty steps to midday sweat and exhilaration, the men's REI Co-op lightweight base layer bottoms wick and breathe to keep you comfortable all the way.www.rei.com
Where these under your pants and when things get warmer just stop somewhere, lean against a stone wall or a tree, take off your pants and the base layer, put your pants back on and go. You are on the Camino so no one will care that you take your pants off.
Make sure you get the ones that wick the sweat and are quick dry.
I bet after a while at those temperatures you will not even wear them.
I walked in September and the heat was alot more of a concern to me than the cold. That is why I now start my caminos no earlier than late October.
I am sure you will find what is correct for you. I have shopped in Decathlon on a few occasions and as you know that have what you need. Buen CaminoHi, thanks for your reply. That was really helpful, I understand now that even the lightest weather tights will meet what I needI am sure you will find what is correct for you. I have shopped in Decathlon on a few occasions and as you know that have what you need. Buen Camino
Haha, I was replying in American lingo pants (trousers), not underwear UKYou won't be wearing pants? Ooh-la-la!!!
Seriously, why won't you be wearing pants?
Yes, this is a great idea and also another use of tights for sleeping.I think he means trousers
…. though he is in the UK …
@GavinSkull
Have you thought of merino tights?
… good for cool and warmer temperatures.
Also useful in cold albergues at night.
The Patagonia look great, if expensive …
UNIQLO Heattech leggings—-work well—-lightweight to pack, breathable, and dry quickly and inexpensive. You can order on UNIQLO.com. It is a Japanese company—-so I recommend ordering one size larger than you typically would.I am doing the Camino Frances in September and want to get some tights to stay warm hiking in the cold morning mountains. I have no experience wearing long tights and am confused about what types I should get: cool weather vs cold. The temperature will be 8-10 celsius lowest and rising to 20 c midday at low altitude so I need something that is warm in the morning but cool enough still when it warms up coming down the mountain and I can easily take off. From my experience doing the Primitivo two years ago I was mostly okay in short tights and shorts but there were a couple of times in the mountains when I would have liked something warmer.
Would cool weather 15 celsius type be okay or should I go for cold weather 10 celsius type, as below? Do compression pants make much difference? Other options you might recommend?
Some I was looking at on Decathlon:

Ive walked the Frances twice through September and never wore anything but shorts. I have looked at the Uniqlo but they are more of underwear garment than a technical product like running tights so they aren't right for my needs.UNIQLO Heattech leggings—-work well—-lightweight to pack, breathable, and dry quickly and inexpensive. We've always used silk leggings underneath our hiking pants. It's not overkill but will keep a chill off. Most outdoor suppliers have them, but I would go with the silk.I am doing the Camino Frances in September and want to get some tights to stay warm hiking in the cold morning mountains.
