Hoka TenNine, a bit strange looking.

Has anyone tried out the new Hoka TenNine Hike? I’m always looking for shoes that are kind to my feet. They are a bit odd looking to say the least.

The sole juts out past the main body of the boot at the heel and has a cut out running down the center that allows each side to move independently. I can see how they might reduce pressure on heel strike. I can also see how they might cause others to laugh....

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Forget it for the trails other than running:

WARNING: HOKA ONE ONE designed this product as a piece of specialised equipment specifically for running. Think of these like ski boots or cycling shoes. Using this product for anything other than running may impair balance and dexterity. So, don't wear these on stairs or while driving. Time to Fly!

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

It appears they have added a ”boot” style upper to the funky sole of the One One and given it the name TenNine Hike (at least on the US site). Though I would think the issues with the heel would be similar regardless. I can’t imagine walking through mud with these on. The would end up weighing 5 lbs (2.27 kg) each!

Speaking as someone with One Ones, the soles on the TenNines are way more funky than the soles on any of the other One Ones I've seen. Yes, they are thick. But none of them have that jutting forked heel. To me, that is much more of a departure than a bit more of a boot upper.

There seem to be two models of the TenNine: The TenNine Hike (pictured at the top of the thread, which has men's and women's versions and, as FRM notes, a taller "boot" profile) and the TenNine unisex (which Tincatinker links to and which is a running shoe and recommended only for running). The TenNine Hike does not carry the warning that Canuck quotes: https://www.hokaoneone.com/ca/en/ca/men/tennine-hike-gore-tex/1113510.html

Much as I like my Hokas, I'm not sure I would wear these. They look big and heavy, especially, as FRM points out, if they are taken through sticky mud.

I have loved my Hoka One One's, but would not wear these ever...that design is unnecessary. They will "come and go" imo, just like those "rolling" shoe bottoms did nearly ten years ago...a fad. In addition, we ladies prefer our feet to look small and dainty when at all possible. This model ain't gonna help do that.

I love my Hoka runners, but I'd probably swerve these space age shoes - they also cost a pretty packet. Their trail runners are good and they also do a supported running shoe (they call it a stability shoe) for people who pronate, which has helped me immensely.

So I’m still more than a little intrigued by the TenNine Hike. The specs show they only weigh 17 oz (about .5 kg) and the upper is constructed of Gortex. They are a bit pricey. I suspect they would attract a lot of attention on the trail. Perhaps I’ll get a pair and report back, both on the boot and the jokes made about them.

My wife loves her one ones. She wants me to get a pair for my Camino but I love Brooks Cascadias. After about 5000k worth of caminos they have never
Let me down. Might
Just get a pair of one ones to kick around in. But these things in the photo? Sometimes we just have too much technology

When I received the email introducing this footwear (cannot think of an accurate way to describe them) I was hoping someone here on this forum would be brave enough to get a pair and give us a report. I'm a Hoka fan of several years, but these seem to have forgotten the old design maxim of form following function.

Two big pluses:
1) You wouldn't have to bend over as far in the morning to tie them up... Just rest those outriggers (backriggers?) on the floor and the laces will be half way to your knees
2) You wouldn't need to worry that someone else accidentally took your shoes off the shoe rack in the Albergue

I was on a lockdown walk recently and whilst having a rest on a dry stone wall, I saw a man wearing these. I had never seen anything like them before. There was also an elderly man walking his dog on the narrow path. When the man in the Hokas stode past him, he did a triple take at the Hokas, continued towards me where he said: "that lad must be very comfortable with his sexuality to wear boots like that"...before disappearing up the path.

It is reminiscent of the fictional shoe "Spasmotica" in the movie Elizabethtown.

Why?
And those would give me blisters around my ankles, I fear.
