Hello all!

I am starting from Lourdes on April 4. My flight from Dublin will land in Biarritz in the mid-afternoon. I plan on busing to Bayonne and taking the train to Lourdes. Will I need to purchase tickets (bus/train) in advance? I want to participate in the candlelight procession in Lourdes. Approximately what time does that begin? Any suggestions on pilgrim lodging in Lourdes? I will have 4 to 5 days to walk to SJPP to meet friends. I must bus up a couple of sections to time things out. Is it easy to get a bus in this section? Will I need reservations for a bed in this section? Thanks for all suggestions!!!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Stay at the main pilgrim house in Lourdes. Communal dinner and lovely hosts. For anywhere in France, you really should call a day ahead to let gite/albergue owners know that you are coming so they’ll be open for you. 5 days won’t be enough to reach SJPdP unless you really walk fast and long. Buses run near the route, but not really along the route. You may have to try Blablacar or similar, perhaps from Oloron

It took us five days to reach SJPDP.

1. Lourdes to Bruges 30 km,
2. Bruges to Oloron Sainte Marie 34 km,
3. Oloron Sainte Matria to Echtebar 31 km.
4. Echtebar to Saint Just Ibarre 27 km,
5. Saint Just Ibarre to SJPDP 22 km

Candlelight procession starts every day at 9.00 p.m.

We did not make any reservation for a bed on that section.

Great post! Thank You!! How did you get to Sarria? Those are long days. I might have 5 days, I would be a little concerned about starting out with 30km days. 🤔

We have walked all the way from Lourdes to Santiago de Compostela in 30 days, so we have reached to Sarria on 26th day of our walking.

That was a miss print. I met to say, “How did you get to Lourdes?” Thanks! I plan to be in Santiago on May 13. I retired! 😎👍

We took a plane from Split (Croatia) to Toulouse and then a train from Toulouse to Lourdes.

We also took the train from Toulouse. Short ride. Candlelight procession at 9pm. Walk from Lourdes was only us. We did not call ahead but always found someone who took us to the village albergue. And we were the only ones there. From Oloron we did not go on to SJPdP, but went over the Pyrenees at Somport, walking the Camino Aragones. One of our favorites. But wait...there's more! After Logrono, we went southeast on the Camino del Ebro (the wrong direction) all the way to Montserrat. Heckuva camino combo. Unforgettable.
