Planning to walk 2016 or 2017
I am leaving in a couple of hours...will be in Leon by tomorrow afternoon. Staying there the weekend and start walking on Monday 5th September. Nervous excitement! Newbee and solo female walker....playing it 'safe' with luggage transfer although my day pack weighs 6kg...also prebooked accommodation. Hope my feet don't let me down. Can you pls tell me if walking through the industrial area in Leon is safe as I don't really want to catch the bus out of town. Thanx for all the helpful info on the Forum....made my planning so much easier.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Can you pls tell me if walking through the industrial area in Leon is safe as I don't really want to catch the bus out of town.
It is safe. There are interesting shops along the way, so you can pick up some supplies. As the route turns to the right off the city streets, there is a nice Hobbittown of wine bodegas! The walk behind the car dealerships is quiet and without a lot of vehicle traffic, then rejoins the main road just before La Virgen del Camino. Buen camino!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Although safe following the camino leaving Leon can be dreary. However, it is only 7 km to La Virgen del Camino and an extraordinary 20th century church. The town is named for a famous 15th century figure of the Virgin holding the dead body of Christ. Today the figure is in a splendid church designed in the 1960s by a Dominican monk, Francisco Coello, a follower of the Brutalist style of Le Corbusier. Located directly on the Camino Frances at Av Astorga, 87, in the midst of chaotic suburb the church is a superbly maintained architectural gem as well as a haven of peace. Be sure to enter it; the calm interior is splendidly lit with deep chrome yellow glass.

Opposite the church you can choose to either continue on the main camino which parallels the highway or pick up the peaceful alternative camino route going slightly southwest towards Villar de Mazarife. It is always very pleasant to escape the N120 highway noise and suburban sprawl while crossing wide flat plains up to V de M where there are several pilgrim albergues and regular accommodation. From V d M the alternative camino continues to Hospital de Ă“rbigo to rejoin the main CF. You can read more about the alternative more rural route in this earlier Forum thread .

Hospital de Orbigo offers many accommodation options; my favorite is the Albergue Verde. They accept reservations and offer wonderful group meals each evening. Leaving HdO turn right to follow the camino towards Astorga via Santibanez de Valdeiglesias on a wonderful rolling rural path.

Happy planning and Buen Camino!

Thank you. I will most definitely stop at the church in Virgen. Unfortunately as a 1st timer I decided to keep to the CF so I prebooked accommodation in Viladangos so I will not be walking the more scenic Mazarife route this time. Something to look forward to on next walk!

Buen Camino!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Buen Camino Nazare!

Thank you everyone. Stop over in London now, then Madrid to Oviedo and finally Leon. Can't wait to get there. Any suggestions where I can buy a local mobile SIM in Leon?
