And to taste the morcilla bocadilo served next door. The albergue in San Juan de Ortega is located in a former monastery. All pilgrims should stay there at least once, if for no other reason than to pay homage to an old treasure.
Oh, I looked longingly, and with some nostalgia, at that. We make a similar, much loved 'bunwich' out of that back in my home country (except we don't call it morcilla, or even blood pudding; we call it 'black pudding'). But now that I no longer eat meat, or meat products, I could not indulge in it when I was on Camino. I was tempted, but I just couldn't.And to taste the morcilla bocadilo served next door.
I stayed at the Samos Monastery in May, 2014 and consider it to have been well worth the 3 or 4 k detour. It is artistically painted and has all necessary facilities. Plus, there is a very accommodating cafe/bar right across the street. The cost was typical of church operated albergues-donation or about 5€. I took several photos of it that are available on the Forum.I just read of the Benedictine Monastery at Monte Irago, and am looking forward to a stop over there.
Is anyone aware of other active monasteries along the Camino Frances that open their doors to Pilgrims?
Also, if you have stayed at any of them, would you be willing to share a bit about your experience?
Annakappa, thank you for noting this. While the old monastery buildings have great appeal, I am inquiring about active monasteries that allow and encourage participation in their rituals.Just a comment, that even although you might be staying within the walls or grounds of a monastery, it doesn't mean that you will be involved in partaking with the monastical rites, unless you really ask .
Great list. Thank you, margaret. I will start looking into these.AdaR,
Here is my personal inventory of active monasteries/convents along the CF which do accept pilgrims.
Amongst these examples are successful and poor examples of architectural adaptive re-use, retro fitting and contemporary additions. Much to view and ponder. For location info and basic photos see the Eroski site Etapas and albergues . For more personal comments and /or photos see each location as cited in my Camino Gazetteer. For more info on Benedictine monasteries see here.
Roncevalles, three albergues; the new, the old and the winter, in monastery structures
Trinidad de Arre, in a monastery garden
Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Nuestra Sra. de la Anunciacion, in monastery
Carrion de los Condes, monasterio de Santa Clara, in monastery wing and albergue Espiritu Santo, in monastery wing
Sahagun, albergue de las Madres Benedictinas, in monastery
Leon, albergue del monasterio de las Benedictinas (Carbajalas), in monastery
Carracedo del Monasterio, albergue, in monastery grounds
Samos, Albergue del Monasterio de Samos, in monastery wing

and north of Melide, Sobrado dos Monxes, Santa Maria do Sobrado monastery at this site
Happy planning and Buen Camino!

I never expected to find this information on the monasteries readily available and I hope it turns up in the reference section. I'm thoroughly enjoying your beautifully written blog!! Thanks so much for your invaluable contributions here.AdaR,

Wrong side of St Jean, sorry, but the Franciscan House, Zabalik, at Saint-Palais (1, Xibaltarre Hiribidea) is a delight. You are given a cell on the first floor, very simple, and are included in the evening meal and breakfast. When last I was there it consisted of just the Prior and one friar, with two women from the town doing the cooking a serving. The Prior was hoping that "father will send us some young brothers from the Philippines" - (the call to the robe is growing there). Built as a rectangle with an inner open area it is a haven of calm and tranquility, they have a large and unused cottage garden - such a perfect place to renew!
The word.If anyone would find it useful I will combine all these entries into one geographically organized list for the CF with links to relevant webs. Just say the word!

The word.
That would be very useful for me, so I am assuming others would appreciate it as well.
Thank you!
Hi Jill and according to Brierley has a price per room to match - 3* (so around E100 per night). Cheers.Carrion de los Condes also has the Monastery of San Zoilo which is now, I gather, a rather good hotel.
Yes, sadly. I remember when an injured pilgrim was hosted there for several weeks, for free. The religious were still running it. Who owns it now, I wonder?Hi Jill and according to Brierley has a price per room to match - 3* (so around E100 per night). Cheers.
Ok! By 25/08/2015 it should be formatted and posted in this Forum thread; ASAP I promise.

So very grateful to you for doing this. I start a new Camino from Toulouse in the next few days and will try to do the same for that Camino.Angela,
The list is made! It is post #26 above.
Buen camino!
MM
Yes it is intended for a spiritual rest. In 2014 I stayed here for 3 days and enjoyed the tranquility of the place. Fr. Pius is an excellent cook and makes all his own preserves. I you can a fford to spend a few days from your Camino do stay here. You can stay for a few days with the monks in Rabanal. It's not an albergue to spend a night but a place for a retreat.
