I imagine most have read about the fire in Muxia. A lightning fire caused by exploding transformer which set the roof of the church on fire. The photos are saddening. However, just like on the Camino, the amount of sentiments, support, and care pouring in are incredible. While much is lost and irreplaceable, even more would not be destroyed…just like the peregrinos.

Here is something I came across this morning. I quite like it.

Keep a smile,
Simeon

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I spent a few days in Muxia last month, including time spent in contemplation at the rocks surrounding the church.

A young Galician pilgrim from Muxia whom I'd met a few days before arriving in the village was the first person I contacted, asking how the villagers were coping with the fire - just a decade after the offshore sinking of the Prestige. He wrote the following in reply to my email:
The fire was a disaster ... in the village they are very devoted to their church and virgin .. It 's a bit like the protector of fishermen ...
The church will be saved, the image of the Virgin, of the fourteenth century, was also saved because it was kept in other place and the virgin burnt was a copy .. what has been lost is the main altarpiece ,which was a work of art by the same author of the facade of the cathedral of Santiago ... and the main dome is holding for now but maybe it falls.. i hope no..

I was moved to write about Muxia and the fire on my blog, and invite pilgrims and non-pilgrims alike, to read it: http://healingpilgrim.com/2013/12/26/a-sad-christmas-story/.

Happy new year and may the people of Muxia enjoy a peaceful and safe 2014.
