Norte albergue

Time of past OR future Camino

Which albergues would you recommend for San Sebastian and Zarautz please?
There doesn't seem to be much pilgrim accommodation in those areas
I will be walking during April. Is it necessary to book?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Have a look at Gronze and read the reviews there...

One one occasion stayed in Pasajes and walked through San S.

On another stayed in San S in an inexpensive room in a "hostal" with a shared bathroom.

San S has a lot of "events", would recommend booking there.

Walked through Zarautz on both occasions.

Buen Camino

I was “stuck” in SS for 6 nights in 2019 due to a knee issue that required a visit to the ER. I was at Downtown River Hostal for two nights and at A Room in the City for four. Both are on Booking. The second is the better location, closer to the beach promenade and old town. I would DEFINITELY book in advance. I remember that weekend prices were higher.

I can't recommend the place we stayed in San Sebastian, but we enjoyed Blai Blai Hostel in Zarautz. It's not a pilgrims-only hostel, but I believe everyone who was there the night we stayed there in mid-April this year was a pilgrim. The built-in bunks were comfortable and I seem to recall they had curtains. The kitchen was small but serviceable. The location was on the Camino and near the beach. The manager was friendly and helpful. https://blaiblai.com/en/

I stayed at A Room With a VIew as the municipal was closed and I like it.

In the beginning stages of the Norte there are now far fewer pilgrim albergues than when I first walked it in 2018.

The municipals in Zarautz, Larrabetzu, and Lezama are all now closed, along with some others. @Dave has reported these closures on the forum.

Is Galerna hostel in Zarautz still open or will be in April?
I dont see it mentioned on Gronze at all

I emailed Galerna and they got back to me, the albergue is open and price is 22e and payment must be made by bank transfer upon booking!
Looking at some reviews online for Galerna, they are pretty pathetic, so i might look into other options first and leave this as a last resort.

@sunnydays In San Sebastian I suggest you Koba Hostel and in Zarautz Bai Bai Hostel. I book in advance. Take a look at Forwalk, You will get information about the different stages and a list of accommodation along the Way. It will tell you how far off the Camino an accommodation is. You can also check reviews and book your accommodation in advance comfortably using this guide https://app.forwalk.org/2/8/en/28/#-5.2/43.2/6.2/180

Anyone know if Albergue Juvenile Ondaretta in San Sebastian accepts walk in's?
I have just realised some hostels dont accept walk in and must be booked in advance, A room in the city and Koisi are like this.
I dont like booking in advance and wont have any way of booking when on the camino.

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
You can answer your question by checking Gronze. On their page for Albergue juvenil Ondarreta - La Sirena it says that reservations are obligatory.
