You can get all the statistics regarding pilgrims - how many, where they started from, ages, occupations, reasons for walking etc at the official website:
http://www.archicompostela.org
When the page opens, click on the shell for the pilgrims pages and then click on your preferred language.
Last year's stats for the number of pilgrims who earned the Compostela in June/July/August/September were:
JUNE 12 620
JULY 18 807
AUGUST 24 820
SEPTEMBER 12 168
These numbers do NOT include those who were given the other certificate or those pilgrims who did not walk the last 100kms of the route.
In the 2004 Holy Year, almost 175 000 pilgrims got the Compostela but the albergues reported over 650 000 pilgrims using the refuges along the routes.
Reasons given for walking the camino were:
Religious and other 49 977
Religious 35 456
Not religious reasons 8 491
79 396 walked the Camino Frances, the majority starting in Sarria - that is why it gets so hectic towards the end where crowds of locals take a weeks holiday to walk the last 100kms and earn the compostela.
