Fly to Pamplona or Paris. From Pamplona you take a bus or taxi to SJPdP. From Paris you take the train to Bayonne, then on to SJPdP. I think Pamplona is better, but many other like Paris. If you arrange a multiple flight ticket to Pamplona, you then can return from Santiago.

Tisha,
Last year I flew to Madrid (MAD) then took the train to Pamplona where I spent one night. The next day I took the 90-minute bus over the Pyrenees to SJPdP (It took me several days to hike back to Pamplona!!!) Falcon is right - I've met others who flew into Paris then took the train to Bayonne etc. I guess for you it may come down to airline connections and cost! I suppose that flying into Pamplona will be more expensive as it's a smaller airport and served by fewer airlines. Have fun with your planning - and buen camino! (I spent 1 whole summer working at a salmon cannery in Clam Gulch, Alaska - fond memories!)

I flew into Paris, took the TGV directly from Charles de Gaulle airport to Bayonne and then caught another train from there on into SJPDP. It was a long day of travel, but I enjoyed it. Everyone getting off at SJPDP was headed to the camino and all looked pretty bleary eyed, but there was the sense that we were all in it together! It was funny seeing so many nationalities and hearing so many languages in that small French village.

From Baltimore, Maryland to Pamplona through New York and Madrid has a transit time of 16:50.

The return flight from Santiago to Baltimore through Madrid and New York is 16:59 ($1,041 fare to the multiple cities).

Paris to Bayonne is about five hours (65E) after about a 13 hour flight ($1,311 round trip), and I would have to get back to Paris from Santiago.

Getting from Pamplona or Bayonne to SJPdP is approximately equal for time, though the bus is a bit more expensive at 20E.

From Alaska Paris may be a better bet, but it is a long way from SJPdP!
