I have the dishonor to call out this Hostal after they refused to refund a reservation after a pilgrim in our group suffered a heart attack and had to be rushed to Madrid in an ambulance.
When I called the owner Eduardo to explain he actually blamed Hotel.com. Obviously $ matters more than pilgrim spirit. Shameful and very sad

So sorry to hear this! I hope the pilgrim in your group recovers quickly. It actually could be the agency that has the fees. It depends on how their relationship is structured?
 
The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
This might also help. There has been consolidation in the booking industry.
For those keeping track, Expedia now owns Travelocity, Orbitz, Hotels.com, Hotwire, Trivago, CheapTickets and eBookers, among others. Pricelines online travel agencies (OTAs) now includes Booking.com, Kayak and Agoda.com.
So you may want to appeal to the parent company if you can not resolve the problem with Hotels.com.

This is another example of why we should all have travel insurance. Could happen to any of us!
 
Not sure how recent all of this happened. Personally, I wouldn't let $55 =/- ruin my camino experience. I hope you only tend to this once you are home and rested. Most times when we're not in the throes of a crisis we can resolve the situation better or make peace with it. Good luck with the dilemma .Sending along prayers for the pilgrim who fell ill.

The harsh and derrogatory language against the business without further knowledge of the exact circumstances is unfair to the business under discussion.
It is possible that given time the disagreement will be resolved.
