Santiago to Rome

Hello

I am new to this forum and am about to do a Camino from Santiago to Rome. It is a spur of the moment inspiration, and have 4 days to sort things out. Whilst this might seem foolhardy, I should mention that last year I made the decision to walk to Santiago from the Netherlands in about 4 seconds, so by comparison this is down right turtlesque

Having completed the 2450km, on last years Camino, I have a pretty good idea what to expect and what to avoid in regards the walk, packing, etc. I will travel with tent and bag, and will go by way of the Noord, and then along the coast towards Italy?

I wondered if anyone had done this Camino before? either way, and could furnish me with any tidbit of advise before I start.

Not done it myself but I met someone on the Via Francigena who had started in Santiago then walked to Rome and Assisi and was headed north to visit family in France before flying home to Canada. I had been thinking that Canterbury to Rome was quite far enough....

Best wishes with your ambitious trek. We walked the Way of St. Francis (Tuscany to Rome) last spring and it was wonderful. Lots of elevation and few people on the trail when we went. The Umbrian mountains are spectacular. We used GPS, which helped a lot. Sandy Brown, author of the guidebook, has a Facebook page that was helpful. Hi, did you go independently? I am about to do my first walk pilgrimage from della Verna to Rieti, not sure if I can go without a tour company, and whether I should book up in advance. Can one keep luggage to under 7kg? Thanks for any advice, Celia from NZ

Hi Celia
In the end I opted for a 3 leg journey this year. Just finished the first, Madrid to Sahagun (320km), as I had walked from the Netherlands last year to Santiago along the Frances, and wanted to do the Castillian route from Madrid. It was sensational in spring. Then off to Porto on Monday to do the Portuguese route to Santiago before finally doing the via francigena from Turin to Rome, taking in St Francis way. Next year Turin to Santiago to fill in the way. I walk for CharityWater so carry 20kgs in solidarity with those who carry that daily for their daily water. I cannot recommend the route from Madrid highly enough, BUT do it in spring and be prep for cold nights, especially in the mountains. Later in summer the sun on the Castillian meseta is fierce, so time it right and you will be shrouded in fields of wild poppies and thistle! Spectacular! As are the beautiful and hospitable folk along the way.

How long did the whole trip take & would you recommend it for a first timer?

I'm planning on starting my trip this mid-October and I'm going back & forth between the Camino Francés only or go further. The dream would be to go all the way to Jerusalem but I think that'll take about a year
