Skipping frances compostela until I get back to santiago?

I'm in Portomarin at the moment... I'll be in Santiago in 3 days unless the weather makes some changes to my plans. Either way I was thinking that I would just walk through Santiago and go directly to Finisterra. In Finisterra I would collect my Finisterra credential and after taking the bus back to Santiago... I can go to the pilgrims office and get my camino frances credential.

I believe this will save me som time and I won't have to carry and be afraid of damaging my credential on my way to Finisterre. There is a lot of rain coming...

Is there a problem doing it this way? I don't need my frances credential in Finesterra right?

The Pilgrim Passport which you now have and which is stamped everyday or twice a day as proof of your journey is known as the Credential. At the Pilgrims' office in Santiago you present this in order to receive your Compostela. You do not need your Compostela to walk to Finisterre, but you will need to present your Credential (Pilgrim Passport) in order to stay in pilgrim albergues along the camino to Finisterre. Once you walk into Finisterre you can apply at the municipal albergue for the special Finisterre certificate which is very colorful.

While you are walking through Santiago on route to Finisterre be sure to stop at the Galicia Tourist Office at 30 rua do Vilar near the cathedral. They have a good free multilingual list of all services- albergues, restaurants, shops, along the Finisterre camino; their muli-lingual staff is also very helpful.

The Pilgrim Office will, for one euro, provide you with a neat little cardboard tube, plastic block ended, that will protect your compostella and your Fisterra when you achieve it. If you follow Margaret's excellent advice to drop in to the Galcian Tourismo then you will already be in the Rua Villar in the same street as the pilgrim office.

If you do decide to get the Compostela and the nice tube make sure you also use a plastic bag just in case your backpack gets soaked. It doesn´t often happen but at times it does. And in the case it gets ruined you can always ask for a replacement.

Thank you for your answers and thank you Margaret for the tip on the tourists office. I will decide what to do when I get there. Maybe the line won't be so bad. And the plastic tube in a plastic bag seems like a good solution.

Hope Portomarin is cooler than it was a few weeks ago when I collapsed with heat exhaustion at the top of the steps and had to have water poured over me before I could stagger into the town!

Not a problem at all in my experience, btw, there is a place close to the Pilgrims' office that will laminate your Compostela for a few Euro and pack it safely into a card board tube ;-) Buen Camino! SY
 
You could also post your credencial home to save yourself from the worry of carrying it onto Finisterra. The post office isn't too far from the tourist office.
When I've posted my credencial back to the UK it was nice to have it waiting there for me when I got home.
 
Personally I wouldn't like to risk the postal service. I'm sure most people would rather lose their passport (not credentia) than their compostela.
