Solid Shampoo

Okay, those of us who live in the US, UK, & Canada are having to deal with insane policies regarding liquids on board aircraft, such as the very dangerous & apparently explosive Starbucks coffee, bottled water, shampoo, & toothpaste. Even though these restrictions have been lifted somewhat, they are still a pain in the neck. So, what to do? What to do?

On a frequent flyer forum, I found a reference to this solid shampoo from the JR Liggett company. It's environmentally friendly, & according to the company, can be used as a shampoo, body soap, & laundry detergent! It comes with a "camp towel" and has its own carrying case so that it dries out during the day.

buy shampoo, toothpaste etc on arrival; they do have such things in Spain, you know ;-) You can take bottled water etc on board if you buy from shops in duty-free area of airport, i.e. don't take through security.

Problem is that airports' elaborate security scanning is based on metal detection. No-one had considered the idea of liquid explosives, so their expensive scanners can't detect them, and the simplest way of removing the danger is to ban the lot. At the moment, it's not clear how long these restrictions will be in place; if we have to wait for airports to install liquid-explosive detectors, we might have a long wait.

Yes, I know they sell shampoo & toothpaste in Spain. It's just that I'd rather have what I need before I go so that I don't have to spend time shopping for necessities once I arrive. I've also had shampoo & body wash leak out into my bags before, so a solid shampoo will fix that problem. As always, YMMV.

And as for the liquid explosives blowing up planes, you'd need a huge quantity, in the right percentages (which are not available to the general public anyway), mixed at the right temperature in order to get a working "bomb." Also, it would take 3-5 hours of proper mixing, probably in the airplane bathroom, which would give passengers & FAs plenty of time to realize something was up because of the long line & the smell created, break down the bathroom door & beat the living daylights out of the idiot inside. As it is now, in the US, we have to separate our evil liquids (no more than 3 oz) & have them in a separate plastic baggie for "inspection." Now, if they can't screen for liquid explosives, just how does this make me safer? Oy. :roll:

which might well include the solid one you mention. If it's like a bar of soap, I suppose you might get away with it.

Dear Wolverine,
In South Africa you can buy a solid shampoo/soap bar with Teatree oil or one with Citronella that will also help keep the bugs away (but won't leave you smelling too nice!)
A good tip for clothes washing soap is to buy a bar of common old green soap (in South Africa it is called Sunlight Soap) and take the wrapper off allowing it to dry out a bit. This way it will last much longer and doesn't get 'sloppy' after use.
Planning is so exciting - am sure it will all go well with yours.

Hi Sil! They make solid laundry detergent in Mexico too, and sometimes sell it on this side of the border. As for the restrictions, because of them, this will be my first trip to Europe since 1991 that I will not be stopping in the UK.
