Walked Sarria to Santiago in 17, now hope to walk the rest of the caminos over the next few years
Planning on walking from St Jean Pied next year. Is Biarritz the best airport to fly into?

Certainly the most convenient. Quick and cheap bus journey from there to Bayonne station then a train to SJPDP. Or you could book a seat on the Express Bourricot shuttle bus direct from the airport to SJPDP.

That depends on where you're flying from. From the USA I find it cheaper and more convenient to book a round-trip ticket to Madrid. Take the train to Pamplona and spend the day and then the bus to saint Jean. And then it's easy to get a train or an airplane from Santiago back to Madrid..

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

Yes, getting to Biarritz from North America (especially a small town on the west coast 😉) can be quite a journey. This year I flew in to Paris, spent a few days, took the train from Gare Montparnasse to SJPdP via Bayonne, then flew home from Porto, which was a comfortable 4 hour bus ride from SJPDP.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
I fly into Madrid then get a bus from there to either Pamplona for a day or two of rest, then a bus to SJPP.
Or you can get a bus directly to SJPP from the airport during the season

Where are you flying in from? That is a necessary part of the question you omitted and advice is difficult to give without that.

If you’d like to break your trip in London or get a good fare there, you can also use Ryan Air to reach Biarritz/Bayonne, though that service doesn’t exist all year round.

I was just looking for the ALSA bus schedule from Pamplona to St. Jean, and couldn't find anything. What is the season for that route? Also, on the bus from the airport, is that Madrid or Pamplona?

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

There is no bus on the schedule because service is shut down for the winter. ALSA normally doesn't update its schedule more than a month in advance. Usually there are buses laid on for Easter and sometimes that service is continued into summer with one two or three buses per day as the summer traffic increases. It then shuts down, reducing from three to two to one then none daily , usually by the end of October but sometimes later.

It is possible to catch a bus from Madrid Airport to Pamplona and other destinations such as San Sebastian. ALSA goes via Sorria or Zaragosa. PLM Autocares goes direct. There is more frequent service from Avenida de America, a major transportation hub that is connected to the Madrid Airport by local transit bus.

Its probably easier to go from Madrid to San Sebastian and onward to Bayonne where you can catch one of several SNCF trains daily from Bayonne to SJPdP. I'm not sure why there is a fixation on getting to SJPdP via Pamplona, its certainly not easier than going via Bayonne.

Biarritz BIQ is the closest Airport to St Jean Pied de Port.

There is Chronoplus local bus service from the airport to Gare Bayonne.

There is SNCF train, several per day all year, from Bayonne to SJPdP.

San Sebastian Airport EAS is the closest airport to St Jean Pied de Port in Spain. Its located about 3km from Gare d'Hendaye where you can catch SNCF train to Bayonne.

There are daily flights from Madrid to EAS and seasonal service to BIQ.

There are daily flights from Paris, London, and other major airports to BIQ.

I assume you meant that Porto is a four-hour bus ride from Santiago.
