hi, myself and my girlfriend will be doing the Camino starting in Bilbao on the 24Th of this month, we plan on camping out often and staying in hostels if possible.

any advice on camping and what will the crowds be like with this being a holy year.

is there anything we should be aware of.

we're both 19 and have been planning this for a little while.

we plan on doing the trip in 4 weeks mixing buses/trains and walking.

any Spanish customs and traditions that we should be aware of?

Thanks in advance. Jamie

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Hola Jamie

That's a great adventure. The routes are all busier but I am sure you will be fine. You have the camping alternative and I think that people along the way will be very helpful to you. If you are mixing walking with buses and trains just remember you need to walk the last 100 kms if getting a Compostela is important to you.

If you time things well you can be in Santiago for the Feast of St James on 25th July. This will be a time of huge celebration with the best fireworks display I have ever seen. There are street shows on every corner, bands in the parks and a whale of time had by everyone. Enjoy.

Buen Camino

Sleeping outdoors means more weight-tent, 2 summer sleeping bags, 2 sleeping pads and maybe cooking gear, this will add up to 2 kg per person and that means maybe a biger, thus heavier, backpack.
You must look into camping in towns , look for campgrounds in the city limits. This will limit your ability to spend time in the city , you won't be able to leave your stuff unattended.
If you sleep out of city limits you will have to organise with more water to drink. cook, wash.
But- it's a great experience and I am sure they'll be tons of other tents around, the worse that can happen is that you won't shower for a couple of days.
Look for light weight tents with musquito nets.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.
