Suggestions, guidance and sagely advice

Hola all,
This past September I walked from St. Jean to Pamplona. I'm eager to pick up where I left off, giving myself two weeks to hoof it from Pamplona to Burgos. I'm thinking I'll fly to Burgos, train it to Pamplona and walk back to Burgos (or a little farther, depending).

Would you share with me your thoughts on getting to and from Burgos (air, air and train, air and bus etc.)? Some of the schedules I found through Kayak call for layovers of 37 hours on the return: not too attractive.

Those seasoned travelers amongst you can surely guide this poor waif to the right road.

I'm flying out of Denver, CO if that makes any difference.

Back in the day, I flew into Madrid (from Ohio), changed planes, and flew to Pamplona. That has gotten quite expensive, however.

Nowadays, I would fly into Madrid and take the train straight to Pamplona from there. There are four or five trains each day, the trip is 3 hours or so, reasonably priced. You can skip Burgos altogether on the outgoing loop. There are Madrid-Pamplona buses, too. They are cheaper than the trains, but not so comfortable IMHO -- and after a long flight from Denver you will be glad to stretch out.

Once you get to Burgos, you can get a train or bus to Madrid easily enough, to catch your flight home. The train station there is way out on the far edge of the city, though. The bus station is right in town.

When I have flown to/from the U.S. to Spain on Iberia, the "add on flights" (Madrid-Pamplona, Santiago-Madrid) were not much more than the U.S.-Madrid Roundtrip. THe last time I did this was 2009 though so as Rebekah has said, maybe the prices have changed on that. If so, I'd follow her advice and take the train.

We always fly with Iberia from Costa Rica on their direct flight to Madrid. From there we take the connecting flight to Pamplona, then walk the Camino and take a return flight from Santiago. This works out much cheaper than taking corresponding bus or train services. You have to fly with Iberia though! Anne

I would fly Denver to Madrid. Train to Pamplona (4 daily trains-3 hour ride- less than 50 Euros). Walk to Burgos then train back to Madrid ( many trains 2-4 hours-less than 50 Euros).
