The need for waterproof boots in july

Hi. I will be walking the camino France's in July and am in the process of buying some new boots. Trying to weigh up pros and cons of waterproof/non waterproof boots at this time. Do I need waterproof boots to walk in the height of summer?

I'd say not - but good boots and shoes are a significant investment you may wish to use them at other times of the year!

I agree, if you get boots of a suitable quality they'll probably have some level of water resistance at least. As far as the Camino is concerned, focus on the fit and comfort more.

Something I don't hear much mention of on the forum, but which troubled me slightly on the Camino Frances, was the difference in surfaces. You're often on farm tracks, but these can vary from mud, to light gravel, to big sharp stones. The latter played havoc with my feet. I don't know if better/different boots would have helped or not, but do consider the quality and thickness of the soles.

When I bought my last pair the shop had a little ramp that you could walk across with different surfaces on it so you could feel how the boots reacted on each. OK, a ramp is not going to replicate Camino conditions, but if you get the chance to use that kind of thing, do.

Don't forget that a waterproof boot will keep the water (sweat) in just as well as it will keep water out. I thatk that in July that would be a definite negative.

Yeah that's what I thought. I was looking at either the none waterproof boot which is the most breathable but only water repellent or waterproof boots which will increase sweatyness but will also keep my feet dry in another sense

My friend in the army recommended some altberg boots. They have a factory in north Yorkshire uk and also in Italy. The properly measure your feet and make a boot exact to your feet. Sounds great

In persistent, heavy rain, nothing will keep your feet dry. The speed with which a boot will dry then becomes a major consideration. Extra socks are useful.

Hi,

I walked mid June to mid July last year and had the same question. I ended up going for Merrell Gore-Tex boots that were also light and breathable...perfect combination that didn't seem possible to find, but I was very happy with the choice. Galicia sure did rain for a few days in July and my feet stayed dry and happy. I think even more important than waterproof is making sure the boots are 100% comfortable, but if you can find a pair that's breathable and waterproof, I'd totally go for it
