Reports that three Romanian national youths were arrested by Oviedo Police suspected of theft from pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. Police said through a press release yesterday that they received a call at 1550 hours, in which a citizen advised that he had observed three young men loitering around the bags of several people, including pilgrims, who were in the Paseo de los Alamos Park located in San Francisco.
After conducting a search all over the place, they found three young people sitting on a park bench that matched the description provided by the person who had called the police.
By observing the police patrol, one of them got up slowly and threw a newspaper at a nearby bin. They proceeded to the identification of these three young and regained the folded newspaper which contained a wallet. Inside amounts in addition to EUR 400 EUR 50 notes, they found several credit cards and a health card with the data of a young Austrian woman named Sonja 31.
Immediately a search began for the area, finding a girl with a backpack. When asked if her name was Sonja the surprised the girl said yes. After looking at her bag discovered that the girl did not know that she had been robbed.
Sonja said that she was walking the Camino de Santiago with other people and only had stopped at the park with her backpack while talking on the phone. She was very appreciative and thanked police for their effectiveness. The three men are being investigated for alleged involvement in such events.
