Yesterday, on the camino from Irun to San Seb ... I was bitten by a dog. I was turning up a driveway of what I thought was a hostel/albergue when several dog (residents) went nuts and started chasing me. One nipped me on the back of my leg. I'd like to report them to "animal control" and at the very least make sure they got their rabies shots...

It was after the Guadalupe but before Pasajes...and the road was paved. The wall surrounding the building had the official seashell icon on it...(which was why I thought it might be a hostel). Anyone have any ideas? (After the dogs went crazy...i just wanted to run...). Thanks!

Go to the Guardia Civil where you are and report it. Push comes to shove you will take them back to where it happened or perhaps you have taken a picture so they can figure out the address?

Spain is officially rabies-free.
Go see a doctor and have your tetanus shot renewed, if necessary. That should be your first priority IMHO.

@anemone- thanks... But i certainly didn't stop and take a picture...
@minak Thanks... While Spain is technically rabies free- it does still exist here in bats. The law would not likely require rabies shots in dogs if it haad been totally erradicated. Because of that law-I am playing the odds that the dog HAS indeed been vaccinated-however... On the off chance the owner was relying on herd immunity or was a tad lackadaisical about such matters... Anyway I think you can see where I am going with this...a little reassurance never hurts...

Xoxo, the girl unlucky enough to get bitten by a dog her first day out on the trail!

Well you weren't bitten by a bat, were you?
Have you had a recent tetanus vaccination? if not, go get one.

What a scary experience! I hope you are fine and fear won't destroy the rest of your Camino. Were you entering a property that the dogs were protecting? Did other pilgrims have similar experiences?

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
@Luka - i was alone... :/. The dogs were likely protecting the premises...and looked clean etc. (which I the main reason I'm not too worried). I mistook what was likely a farmhouse for an albergue... They charged when I walked up the driveway.

This is also why I am reluctant to report to guarda civil...I would hate for a dog to be put through quarrantine if I have unwittingly provoked it... ( major dog lover here!). I was really just hoping to track down owner and double check that the dog has had it's shots. (Peace of mind being the main goal...)

Thanks again! Have you started your camino yet?

"after the Guadalupe but before Pasajes" is a very long stretch (>10km) with several alternative routes. Can you narrow it down some and tell us which route you took and whether you were closer to the Guadalupe sanctuary or Pasajes?

I use Alltrails a lot here in the US, in Iceland, on the Via Podiensis and a bit on the CF. Will it be useful on the Norte? For example, people here say the "warm up" from Biarritz to Irun (or...
Last May I walked the first part of the Norte in the opposite direction, from Santander to Irun. Since I only had two weeks and couldn't reach Santiago anyway, I wanted to swim against the tide...
Tomorrow I fly to Bilbao to start my 5th stint on the Camino. I did the Frances in three parts (2016, 2017 and 2022). Last year I did the Portuguese from Porto. I did the first 200 km of the...
I thought I had this all figured out, but I have ended up with 2 train tickets from San Sebastian (I don't even know if it's the airport or the town) to Irun, instead of ONE that goes all the way...
Hi! I’m a Camino newbie planning on walking Camino del Norte this May-June. I have previous hiking experience and do well on longer distances and so on, but not any super recent multi day long...
I’m on day 2 of the CDN and I’m just blown away by the views. Day 1 Irun to San Sebastián, day 2 San Sebastián to Askizu Buen Camino
