I’ll start my Via Francigena July 30th from Canterbury hopefully reaching Rome. I’m wondering if any Forum members who have walked the VF have any suggestions or a list of convents & monasteries “not to be missed”? I will not be camping. Any other suggestions or tips are welcomed.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Have you read the book by Timothy Eagan," Pilgrimage to Eternity"? He walked from Canterbury to Rome and mentions the places he stayed, some of which are monasteries.
Reading it right now and I am noting his recommendations but since this forum has such a wealth of knowledge I thought I’d reach out also! Thanks 😊

Bueno sera @Colette Z

Here's a list of convents, monasteries and other places I stayed at on my way through Italy to Jerusalem (2013-2014). Many of these places have welcomed pilgrims for centuries and continue to do so today.

I came over the Montgenèvre Pass from France, following the Via Francigena from Cesana Torinese via Turin as far as San Quirico D'Orcia. I left the Via Francigena there, turning left to go crosscountry via Perugia to Assisi and on....

Happy planning!

Thank you soooo much. This is what I value most in this forum, members’ willingness to share their experience. 🙏

It's been a few years since I walked. In France - I did stay in in monastery in St Thierry about 10km before Reims. I also did an old alternate route from Chateauvillain to Langres staying in St Loup sur Aujon with the sisters there -this was especially special for me!

That monastery (of ladies) in St Thierry was a particular favourite of mine. They have limited accommodation so it is worth booking. And yes a very short walk into Reims the next day. You can see it in the distance from the orchard.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Not to be missed is the Abbaye Notre Dame en Wisque. It was a great experience and Sister Lucie was delightful. I hope you have a wonderful journey. Buen Camino 🥾

I cycled to the mens monistery up the road (accidentaly)and asked for accommodation for the night and naturally got a rather quick refusal and shown the door! I'm a woman by the way. Ha ha BTW the convent down the way was an amazing experience from the mass to the meal and the private room. All for 21€ in 2022.

I'm departing Canterbury on 26 July with ferry booked for 27th so there is a fair chance our paths will cross between Canterbury & Rome.

Excellent list - thanks.
I read somewhere else this week that the (tiny) Convento Cappuccini in Chatillon is no longer accepting guests.
BUT Gronze is still showing it (usually reliable) and their website is still showing it https://www.parrocchiachatillon.com/conventocappuccini. Can anyone confirm?
EDIT: I see someone now who said they got a positive response in March 2024.
Possibly there is an issue with a wrong email address on Gronze ......cappuccini in the address is spelled wrongly. I have emailed Gronze. They are usually VERY quick to make corrections.
