Volunteering in Santiago

Lindsay and I have allocated a large amount of time to do our first Camino this summer and it's quickly approaching. We purposefully scheduled way more time than we would need so that we could check out some of the sites not directly on the main trail if we wanted to, but what we've had to think about now is what we will do if we get to Santiago, do Finisterre, come back, and still have time. There's some obvious options like walking more, taking buses to places etc. or just hanging out in Santiago, but what if we wanted to help out? It's a holy year so there have got to be people pouring into the city. Is there any way to volunteer in Santiago or at any of the hostels nearby if we end up having extra time?

Hi - there are some volunteers in the Pilgrims Office but including the staff there is little room for more. They are also looking for a reasonable time committment. The other issue is that volunteers have to find and pay for their own accommodation.

If you have a couple weeks to spare it may well be that you could make a huge contribution as a relief hospitalero in one of the albergues around Santiago even out out on the route to Finisterre. I'm no expert in that and others will profer advice I'm sure.

Good luck

John
