Walking for 3

Hi, this is my intro. I've done one small (tiny!) Camino so far - St Michael's Way in Cornwall - just 12 miles. I am planning to walk the Portuguese Coastal Camino from Porto in September 2020 with a friend. If everything goes well, I'd love to walk the Camino Frances in 2021 but we'll have to see.

I'm walking for 3. There's me - 62, cancer survivor and 1 replaced knee. And there are my two children who have both sadly died. Pax in 1982, Catherine in 2011. I walk in remembrance, carrying my children in my thoughts and heart with me.

The journey of grief has a lot of parallels with pilgrimages - very long, and the only way to manage it is one step at a time. I blog about grief at www.avalleyjournal.co.uk and soon I'll start a dedicated Camino blog "OneStepCamino". I'd like to document my training walks - last one was 10 miles in the Cotswolds in 28 degree heat.

I love reading everyone's stories and experiences so thank you to everyone who shares.

I'll be around the forum now and again. Am quite busy with 'life' but the Camino is something I am very much looking forward to.

I walked the Camino Portuguese 2 years ago with one of my oldest and best friends. He was walking for 2. His wonderful and beautiful daughter who he lost 3 years earlier and himself. I can tell you that the walk helped his heart and spirit alot. I told him to bring (in the Camino tradition, usually at Cruz de Ferro but it doesn't matter where) a rock that felt right in his hand for his daughter and place it somewhere on the Camino. He asked where is a good spot I told him he will know. On the second day he met a man who had lost a child many years ago. I never walked with them but I know they spent 3 days walking together and had a deep bond. Days later he began to open up to me. I am sure over 45 years of friendship made it easier. He finally realized he had to forgive others who he felt were partially responsible for what happened to his daughter and more importantly himself. A few days later we were walking through a beautiful field and he called out to me that he is going to stop here and to he will meet me in the next town at the first open cafe. About an hour later he arrived. All he said was I wish I could walk longer. He will be walking a full camino with me next year. He tells this story at his and other support groups and wants people to know that maybe, just maybe the Camino can help everyone with a burden. Just like you Ducks! I hope you find what you need when you walk. I think maybe you will.
