@Marbe2 . Thanks for the information. Did you take the train from the Airport to Chamartin? We wanted to take the 2:40 train but we are arriving on a Saturday and the schedule is different. We are taking the 3:38 pm train (Alvia). Is security down the escalators? Thanks again!@jalluisi No, line…..went fast…very organized. QR Code check, passport control, then vaccine card check. But we came into T1 (UA) No temperature check? Our plane was late. We sat for an extra hour after picking up our-luggage. opposite carousel 9 some outside air was coming in there. Our express train left at 2:40 from Chamartin.
Remember once you leave the terminal you can not reenter without boarding card!
When you get to Chamartin there is a BurgerKing at one end of the station. You must go outside to find it. It has some tables outside where you can sit. The chicken nuggets were actually tasty. We killed another two hours there…stayed outside the entire time. Remember, your luggage has to go through security at Chamartin and will be scanned. So do allow time for it. If you need water,vending machines in station have them. You will descend esculator to tracks. There your ticket will be scanned. No further on board check occurred.
Great post. Thanks for the info and Buen Camino!!We arrived on Monday in Leon after a very turbulent flight to Madrid. Weather since then has almost been ideal! Today we arrived in Astorga. The Hotel via De La Plata, where we are staying, is a splurge! These pictures are from our third floor room…which surprisingly has two rooms. A living room and a bedroom. huge bathroom, bidet, full bathtub and massages shower. For two, the price was €80 euros (booked ahead). Private Lodgings are pretty full in town.
Spain is reaching 80 percent with first shot vaccinations and around 77 percent with two. Almost everyone in Leon, Hospital de Orbigo, and Astorga is wearing masks. In addition, we were able to get a booster shot before we left. So if not now then when (for us)? We feel quite safe and well, , here, right now, at this time, on the camino..
Tomorrow headed for Rabanal del Camino. We are supposed to get heavy rain. However the first four days were gorgeous.
@Marbe2. Thanks. Maybe we might take a cab too. Just to make things easier. Thanks for your help. Buen Camino!! We will be in SantiagoNo security is on the main floor of the train station. So you will put your luggage on the screening belt and pick-it up on the other-end of the belt. You are not personally screened just all your belongings. Your luggage, backpacks and fanny packs, etc. Then you walk to your esculator bring your luggage down, get your ticket scanned and get on the train . Tip: get on the train a little early if you have more than a backpack because the luggage racks can fill up quickly.
We did not go by rail from. MAD to Chamartin…. Hopped in a cab. We were tired, it was just easier for us.
Thanks for the information. We do arrive at T4.If you arrive at T4 you can take the train directly.
Sounds like you are a day behind me. I’m leaving Rabanal today. I had heavy rain on the way here yesterday and more forecast today. I’m staying at La Candela just outside of town. Decent rooms, good enough dinner last night. There are lots of other accommodation options on the village proper which also look nice. I see a lot of the blue one and NK95’s. No cloth ones that I’ve seen over the past 7 days from SJPP to Los Arcos. Buen CaminoThanks for the pics. Hope you have better weather moving forward. Question for you. Are there certain types of masks that are required? We leave on Friday and packing masks. I bought some medical ones and some N95. . Can one wear other materials for masks in Spain? (cotton, etc)
Thanks and Buen Camino!!!
I have seen a variety of masks. Lots of students wearing blue medical type masks. Lots of folks with black masks which appear more substantial then the thin blue ones. I brought enough KN 95s and some some N95s, and a bunch of blue medical masks. But we decided to ship a bag so we have the room. When walking out of towns, I do not have a mask on-on the trails but have one quite handy so I can put it on in about 5 seconds. Sometimes a group is walking by….and chatting loudly, so I slip the mask on until they are about 10 yards away. I wear two masks when in a short cab, or bus ride and an N95 on the train or plane.Thanks for the pics. Hope you have better weather moving forward. Question for you. Hi, I'm flying to madrid in a little over a week. Spanish travel website regarding vax cards includes "personal ID number" among the mandatory info. This field is blank on my card (and everyone else I've asked). I just have name, birthdate, vaccine info, date of shot, clinic. Do you have this elusive ID # populated? If not, any issue with the vax card check? Thanks.@jalluisi No, line…..went fast…very organized. QR Code check, passport control, then vaccine card check. Remember once you leave the terminal you can not reenter without boarding card! Taxi to Chamartin including luggage was €30.

Thanks. There's a "patient number" on my card but it's blank. No other spaces for ID numbers. Maybe the cards vary by country.Personal ID number is your passport number as I recall.
Thanks, @peregrina2000! Yes it was a gorgeous day to walk! We are staying about 3/4 of a mile outside the inner City. Not a chance we will venture into the inner city today again. It was wall to wall people….no distancing. I was hoping to go to the Cathedral-today, but alas, it is not to be. We ventured in about a block yesterday afternoon and the crowds were worse than at Semana Santa. Tomorrow, we fly to MAD. We then need to pickup our 1 piece of checked luggage and subsequently find our way back to second floor for Covid testing.Congratulations @Marbe2! How wonderful to walk into Santiago on what looks like a beautiful sunny day. You’re lucky to have a place to stay in Santiago on this puente weekend. ENJOY!!! And I dearly hope you can celebrate with something other than KFC to eat!
Congratulations, @Marbe2 !
I hope you have an easy journey home.
@Marbe2
Centre is empty this morning or at least it was at 6:30. No apparent queue at the Pilgrim Office but they want you to complete the online form before you get your place.
Perfect !Just enjoyed a beautiful, renewing outdoor experience, in God’s Cathedral.
