Weather from March to June

Hello fellow walkers,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share an update regarding our plans for the Camino. Unfortunately, due to my wife's recent spine surgery, we have decided to postpone our trip until next year. Her recovery is our top priority, and it's best for us to allow her sufficient time to heal before embarking on this journey.

We have now set our sights on a new timeframe, specifically from mid-March to the end of April next year. I wanted to inquire about the weather conditions during this period and whether we can expect a significant influx of fellow pilgrims.

Your insights and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Holy Week is the last week of March in 2024 (Easter Sunday is the 31st). You can expect more pilgrims at this time but given your mid-March start, you should be around Burgos then so there won’t be the kind of impact you would see during Holy Week from Sarria-Santiago.

The weather will be variable. Sometimes it will be hot, other times it will pour with rain. Nights will probably be quite cold (depending on what you're used to). Here (Asturias) we had snow the first week of March then the second week was lovely. The last couple of days before the Easter holidays (I'm a teacher) were really quite hot.

In mid march there could still be snow up on the mountains. It can be nice and warm during the day, but still colder at night and in the early morning, especially at higher elevation. For an early spring Camino I'd certainly pack a layer of warm clothes, for example a down vest or jacket, or a fleece. Depending on what accommodation you plan to stay at, a warm enough sleeping bag would be needed for albergues.

Semana Santa (Holy Week) probably won't have the substantial influx of pilgrims around Burgos you'll find at the more common starting points, but it will affect what's open on a number of days. You'll want to plan for that. (Says someone whose first Camino was at around that time of year)
