Austrian lady lost and found at El Acebo

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Good to know that this ended well. Being lost so late in the night in a remote place is really a fearsome feeling. Hope she can end her pilgrimage and can bring home a good overall experience.
Apparently she inadvertently took the "Puentes del malpaso" (Misstep Bridges) route, an ancient pilgrim's way, before the modern road. A webpage says that the bridges were built for the pilgrims coming from El Acebo or Riego de Ambrós to Molinaseca. The path is described as not particulary difficult, but abrupt and isolated, good for a trekking day. See the note and a schematic map here

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-

This time the fire brigade only had to use an all terrain car to get these people safe to Roncesvalles.
Not sure I would say lucky in this case because they were just tired, not lost, not injured, not cold, not in the middle of the night, just hetting a ride down the hill. I'm sorry but at that age, unless you know you are super fit, used to long hikes, why attempt this walk?

The Izandorre mountain refuge is a popular place to shelter near the Col Lepoeder, the high spot on the Route Napoleon. I know people have spent the night there too. I took this photo in May 2014 when I crossed the Pyrenees in cold rain and high wind. It was packed inside with wet pilgrims!!

When I first heard of the Camino this is what I imagined albergues were like. Imagine how luxurious San Juan de Ortega feels to me? ;). But I don't recall this shelter, when was it built?

This emergency shelter was built in 2010, a Holy Year. It's 19 km from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and 6 km from Roncesvalles. They also installed around 80 numbered poles along the way, from the border to the Lepoeder pass, so that people can inform the emergency services where they are stranded when they don't know where they are - most people walk without proper maps. If I understand correctly, this couple, aged 70 and 76, from Canada, did not even make it to the shelter before they were exhausted and called for help at 17:00 in the afternoon.

Thank you. I walked this route in 2007 and did not remember the shelter nor understood whatbthese poles were supposed to be.
