Today is of course, Bloom's Day. True, neither Leopold Bloom nor James Joyce ever even considered to walk the Camino, one an apostate, the other a Jew like myself – one who has walked the Camino. Joyce writes a very observant passage which, in my opinion relates directly to the Camino. As we walk, we observe spiritiual ceremony, religious architecture and art, fantastic scenery, enjoy the camaraderie of other pilgrims, and confront either our physical capacities (or lack of them) but more then all, our own inner being, our true self. In "Ulysses" Joyce wrote: 'We walk through ourselves, meeting robbers, ghosts, giants, old men, young men, wives, widows, brothers-in-love, but always meeting ourselves"!!!
PS Cavafy, writing before him in the poem "Ithaka" pleads, "not to fear the monsters waiting on the way to Ithaka, there are none there, they exist only in yourselves" slightly abridged but equally true! Buen Camino.
