PART TWO
Performance: Blister Prevention
The primary test was how the Engo Blister Patch performed with loose (baggy) socks. If the loose sock material rubbed against the skin of my feet, then that would create the conditions for Shear Force Friction, which is the key factor for blister...
Due to word count limits, this is posted in two parts. Part Two appears below as a separate post in this thread.
PART ONE
Engo is a company which has created a line of friction-reducing products related to various health and safety concerns. One of these products are known as “Engo Blister...
Might there be support for a thread discussing durability of various brands and models of footwear, and perhaps the results of cost-benefit analysis (plural) of investing in more costly footwear? Such a thread would complement the numerous very important discussions about fitment.
Before my...
Ditto for all above. The “Rule of Thumb” for Camino backpack load is capacity @ 10% of your body weight. From there, you can go to your local sporting goods/outdoor store and look at packs that fit your body type. Places like REI offer expert advice and clinics on these things. Engineering and...
I have used Topo ultraventures. Not the most cushioned shoes. So will have to do some research when I get back. I did not like how wobbly the Hoka’s felt. And love the wide fit of the Topo’s.
Hi, buy new trainers after medical care, but don't buy them to fit, get them one half size or more bigger, depends on how much your feet swell on long hikes,. I've seen so many problems caused by "comfortable" footwear, when your feet swell they aren't so comfortable!
It’s a serious matter. A few tips gained painfully
Buy footwear a half or full size larger than normal as feet swell. If normal can loose toe nails particularly walking down hills. Also more rubbing.
If hot weather unlikely to need boots, walking sandals are an option. If cold then boots will...
Lots of good advice already.
I tried on every shoe / mid in every trekking store I could find. Then I tried on every brand of trail runner I could find - because they had become ‘the thing’. In the end I ended up with my original Camino footwear in a wide fit. Merrell Moab 3 Mids wide. They...
Get yourself to the nearest Centro de Salud and get those properly assessed and dressed.
After that I would suggest throwing your current footwear in the nearest recycling bin. If they’ve done that to your feet in four days they don’t fit or suit your feet. How many days walking had you done in...
For those with a sense of history about this, here is something I wrote back in 2014. There were others, like falcon269, who had been saying similar things even earlier than that. We often stand on the shoulders of others as we refine the advice we provide today.
Very best of luck to you and hopes for a speedy recovery. Your advice has shaped my Camino gear list (and footwear and backpack fitting) more than anyone.
Side note: I'll be fishing with my 80-year old uncle in Maine next week. He had a pacemaker put in about ten years ago. I ski with him...
I bet thats a sexy rain gear dance 🕺🏼 LOL. I bought a Patagonia Houdini jacket and will use with the poncho- let my legs get wet. Of course this is beginning of June on Primativo- If I was doing March I think my setup may be like yours- I would have the pants with full zips down the sides and...
This is my experience too. I've gone back and forth, but am currently a rain jacket / rain pants / pack cover wearer for these reasons:
We have had to endure some pretty strong winds on the Norte especially, and I've found a tighter fitting jacket and pants are both much quieter and less likely...
I think you are 100% correct about people and their observations. I should have added that my scientific observation is as we used to say in The Bronx when I was growing up, "whatever the person just said (fill in the blank) and a quarter will get you on the subway" I was hoping the wink would...
It's always interesting when other people describe what their observations are. I know that I don't go on the camino to consistently gather data on any of the wide variety of topics that are of some interest to others, and I also appreciate that there may be some observational bias, that is I...
Even if they did, so many have no real understanding of how these conditions will affect them. They simply don’t have the experience to make an informed decision.
Exactly.
And, as @Antnix1 says, “they bring unsuitable equipment/clothes/footwear.”
Hi, ive been training for my CDN in two weeks time and thought i'd get some UK coastline under my belt (Scarborough to Robin hoods Bay). I have to say i was just not prepared for the amount for the sheer amount of mud on the trail. Ankle deep in places with parts of the path washed away and in...
Indeed.. but there were also several statements, in this and in another recent thread regarding this route that, in my opinion were exaggerated. I was simply adding my own thoughts and sharing my own experience in the hope that it might be helpful.
I thought your own advice was spot on: if...
After 16 days of walking (plus another three days to explore Salamanca and Zamora) I've finished my walk on the Vía de la Plata and am now continuing on the Camino Sanabres.
If anyone's interested in a day-by-day report, you can find it on my Instagram...
