    Cartographically challenged

We took the Valcarlos route this past May and didn't have any problems. This section of the Camino is well-marked by little yellow signs saying "Roncevaux Par Valcarlos", rather than by painted yellow arrows. You can see a lot of pictures of this section on our blog...

    Camino Frances Summer 2013

I think it's fine to do it last-minute, but there is a bit of a difference between running and walking. I really felt it in my hips when I first switched from running. And of course you need to get used to whatever shoes you plan on walking in. The endurance you have from running will be great...

    Walking this past May

We walked May 20th to 30th starting from SJPdP and it rained on us 10 out of the 11 days. Every morning was 45-50 degrees F (7-10 C) and the highest temperature we ever saw was about 65 F (18 C). According to Weather Underground, it rained 23 out of 31 days for the whole month. It was cold and...

Gear report from our first 11 days

My wife and I just returned from our first 11 days on the Camino Francés, and I've posted a summary on our blog of what gear worked and what didn't. There are as many opinions on what to take with you as there are people you can ask, but maybe this will help someone in their planning...

    Footwear in the Pyrenees

We went from SJPdP to Roncesvalles via Valcarlos on May 20th and 21st of this year. We had rain both days. The second half of the section between Valcarlos and Roncesvalles is a long, steep uphill, mostly on dirt and grass and some small rocks. I had no problems with grip or stability in my...

Extra distance walking on bike path into Pamplona?

Our book says there's a paved bike path into Pamplona, but it follows the river and is a lot longer. Considering the amazing amount of mud on the trails at the moment, does anyone know the exact distance of that bike path? I'm just wondering how much longer it actually is, and whether it might...

The 790 km sign near Roncesvalles

As promised, I finally got my picture next to the sign I've seen so many times from other people! :-) And yes, it was raining. It's still raining.

New guide book review: Hiking The Camino de Santiago

I've got the brand new Camino guide book "A Village to Village Guide to Hiking the Camino de Santiago" in my hot little hands, just two days before leaving for SJPP. I've done a quick review of it on our blog, which you can find here: http://www.farofflands.com/camino/guide ... e-santiago...

    Transport back to Pamplona?

Thanks everyone, for the helpful info. I started thinking about the complications here, and the timing involved, and started getting more concerned about missing the flight. So I called American Airlines to see what the price difference would be if we had to re-book the flight for the next day...

    Transport back to Pamplona?

My wife and I are doing the first 12 days of the Camino starting in SJPP, and probably ending somewhere between Logroño and Burgos. We'd like to finish the last day's walking and then find transportation back to Pamplona the same day. The next morning, we'll take a train back to Madrid and fly...

Checking a backpack as luggage - found a great solution

Hi Annie, Well, the pack isn't all that big, it's just that the airlines (American and EasyJet) both have a maximum length of 22" (56 cm) for carry-on, and that's about 4" shorter than my pack (I'm 6' 1" so I have the "large" size frame). I could try to get away with it, but the problem would...

Checking a backpack as luggage - found a great solution

It's good advice, to wear something you can walk in for a few days. It definitely makes me think about which shoes I'll wear on the plane. As for checking the bag, I'm afraid I'll have no choice. My wife's bag will meet the carry-on requirements, but mine isn't even close. Fingers crossed. Russell

Checking a backpack as luggage - found a great solution

My pack is too large to carry on the plane, so I'll most likely be forced to check it. I was struggling with various ways to protect it, while also not spending a lot since whatever I pack it with will be tossed as soon as we arrive in Paris. I thought about cheap duffel bags with cardboard and...

    New Camino Guidebook

Looks like an excellent book! Anna, your web site says the book takes 1-2 weeks to ship from Jerusalem. I leave in exactly two weeks, on May 18th. What are my options for expedited shipping to the USA? If Amazon starts shipping it soon, that may be my best option actually since I already get...

    Reservations at Orrisson

Similar problems here. I noticed that their web site said they spoke English, so I sent a reservation request through their web form. After a couple of days, I got an email invoice from PayPal, wanting me to pay for part of the night's stay. But no email, and no answers to any of my questions. I...
