New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Hi , before you now it you are in SJPdP and on your way . It will be a journy of a life time , and you will meet other pilgrims along the way .
Wish you both well and a Buen Camino , Peter .

Thank you Peter, we can't wait. I think our Camino will be just the beginning of our walking free lifestyle for many years to come.

This morning my wife and I took our packs out on the deck and started messing around with them as you do. As I watched my wife fiddle around with pack, checking traps, moving items around, putting it on and off and such, so I began doing the same. She was telling me about the oneness and comfortable relationship she had with her pack and how I would get that feeling with my pack too, it just takes awhile. To my horror my pack and I didn't have that relationship...at all and I just knew we never would. My pack was fighting me ever step of the way. So difficult to put on, getting into the top, compartments, etc, etc. . I went inside and got another cup of coffee, as if that would help or change our relationship. Some worry, and a bit of terror was creeping into my mind now as I sipped my coffee to verify that I got the ratios of coffee, cream, sugar right. I did, so I went back out on the deck and there was my fully packed backpack laying sideways with it's straps in disarray, top flap open and I think snickering. Really. At that moment I decided that that pack and I had to go our separate ways. Now I bought the uncomfortable thing back in May this year, never used to hike, only gear check, pack it full, walk around the house an such. So I grabbed it and slung one stap over my shoulder and we marched out to my truck and threw it on the back seat. It had won, it was going back to the store, if they would have it. As it turns they would and I has measured up for a new pack. A that moment I spotted it. . An Osprey Kestrel 48l, woodland green of all things. As I laid it down on the bench and looked over its features I couldn't help but think it seemed a bit like a little puppy, front paws and legs out stretched, tail wagging enthusiastically and butt in the air. I approached it slowly and started to load it with 20 lbs of rice bags and pillows. I hefted it on and to my joy, thrill and elation it was as though it jumped up and into place, gave a few shakes then settled in. Wow, this must be what my was talking about, that comfortable relationship she had with her pack.

Needless to say I took that puppy home and fed it some clothes, ointments, silk liners and water. We both are very happy now and are looking forward to a long friendship.

My point...I NEARLY TOOK A COMPLETELY WRONG BACKPACK ON THE LONGEST WALK OF MY LIFE THINKING I WOULD GET USED TO IT. I know now what a good fitting pack feels like and we are off on our adventures...Sept 15, 2015.

What a great story Rick, thank you so much for sharing this. :)

I hope your puppy will turn into that type of beautiful-natured, friendly dog that tags along everywhere uninvited but totally unintrusive and completely reliable, supportive and protective when needed?

I did a lot of research before first setting foot on the camino and was very aware of the vast amount of 'go light' advice out there. I tried my best to advise my partner Steve of everything I gleaned from the forum but ........ he completly ignored me !!! Purchased a really good Gregory pack on sale because he loved the way it fit! To my mind the pack itself was far too heavy before filling and he ended up carrying 10kg!!!:oops::( He didn't mind at all, hardly felt the weight as the pack was so comfy!
Just goes to show that all the research in the world means nothing if your charmingly stubborn guy does not care to read it!o_O

I'm sure you and your 'puppy' are in for an epic adventure! Would love to hear some of your tails .... ...ooops tales! :D

Buen camino

Hey majoka! I'll be in SJPdP on the 10th & 11th of September, departing for the pilgrimage on the 12th now. I have a reservation at Auberge du Pelerin (which I chose completely randomly) for the 10th, but not the night of the 11th. Would love to meet up.

Hello @WildPlace and @majoka. I'll also be in SJPdP on September 10th (arriving on the 9th, actually). I'll be starting The Camino on the 11th. Let me know if you've already started planning a meet up, or if there's interest in planning one. Would love to meet some folks before starting. Buen Camino! Looks like @Franicholson and @ChristpherPerry&Emera will also be starting on the 11th.
Change of plans: I'll be arriving in SJPdP on the 10th, resting during the 11th and starting out for the pilgrimage on the morning of the 12th.

Impressive numbers, I must say! So many people setting off in early September that I will surely run into somebody!

I've slapped a "Camino Forum Member" on my mochillo and can't wait till someone says, "Hey, you -- Forum Member!"

To which I suppose the proper response is , "Friend! Let me buy you a vinto tinto!"

Thanks and Buen Camino!

Hello pawel!
my daughter and I will be leaving SJPP on the 24th but depending on how fast /slow you go we may bump into each other. We're only going as far as Orrison the first night and taking our time the first week or two in order to figure things out. So you may well be passing us by the first week or so. Hi,
First time posting to any forum so hope this works.
Planning on doing the Camino for three weeks starting mid-September. Looks like a good place to start and give me adequate time to get to Santiago would be Burgos.
I'm interested to know if anyone agrees and/or has any suggestions on getting to to Burgos. There are direct flights to Madrid, Bilbao and Santander. Just wondering which would be the easiest to travel to Burgos.
Thanks.
Johnnie

Hi Johnnie and welcome to the wonderful and ever so informative world of this forum, it was my first too! :) If you figure out your start date I will add you to our list?

I walked from Burgos to Santiago last year, I had 4 weeks so I took my time but the walk is entirely doable in 3 weeks as the first week at least is very flat!

I took a flight from Liverpool to Madrid and got a bus at the airport direct to Burgos, I booked with ALSA and printed my bus ticket in advance, very easy to do.
Depending on where you are coming from you may have to find your way within the airport to the buses? It's quite a large airport and it took me sometime to figure out I was on the wrong level!!! The people on the information desk speak perfect English and are very helpful. Just be sure you allow enough time after landing to catch your bus. I like to leave at least an hour and a half as I always check my luggage and I like to find something to eat or more likely my first delicious cafe con leche!

I have yet to use a Spanish train and I have read horrors of trying to use the RENFE website? The bus journey takes only 2-2/12 hours and costs between 18-25 euros, there is a free shuttle bus within the airport to get you to the correct place T4 where the buses leave from, so for me it's a no brainer! :D

Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any more questions? you just go to 'Start a conversation' if you want to ask privately?

You will have an amazing trip!
Let me be the first to wish you a
Buen camino!!!

Leaving St Jean on Sept 4th, straight on to Roncesvalles, as Orisson is fully booked that night, really excited just hope I manage that first big walk, I'm nervous about what the road will bring both mentally and physically but hey bring it on!

Hi lemondrizzle! Will add you to the list now :)

I walked all the way to Roncesvalles the first time! Adrenaline and excitement helped but I promised myself if I ever had to do it again I would not carry my pack!
If you have trained with your pack I'm sure you will be fine, I hadn't! it took me a few days to get used to it. Many pilgrims walk to Roncesvalles in 1 day as there are only so many beds in Orisson, I'm sure you will be in great company! :D

Have a great trip
Buen camino

Hi Sarah, do you have any idea of how many pilgrims that start their first day from St. Jean are not on the forum? I think I am the only one leaving Sept 25. My choice has been to walk alone for part of the trail, but certainly would enjoy pilgrim company now and then. Maggie

How many start their first day and have not joined this forum? A wild guess.....95%

If your worried about being alone alot, don't. There will be lots of pilgrims around for you to eat, drink, walk and talk with.

Hi Maggie ........ Dozens!!!

I left St Jean on the 28th of September the first time I walked and there were many, many pilgrims on the camino!
Roncesvalles on our first night out had almost 200 pilgrims! If you are staying at Orisson you are bound to meet pilgrims who would welcome your company, it's just a matter of finding someone who walks comfortably at your pace?

I found that at least 50% of people maybe more set out on their own and either walked by themselves by choice or found company easily if they wished. It's very common for a few people to buddy up into a little camino 'family' and at least meet up at night even if they chose to walk alone, some like the time for contemplation and are not too keen on chatting whilst walking? I liked a mixture of both. :)

How many start their first day and have not joined this forum? A wild guess.....95%

If your worried about being alone alot, don't. There will be lots of pilgrims around for you to eat, drink, walk and talk with.
Hi Dutch, the last thing I do about being alone is worry. I do alone very well. just thought it would be fun to start with a few others and now see that is more than likely I will. Thanks so much. Maggie

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Just the way I like it…of course I should have know there would be lots and lots of folks :>)

Leaving St Jean on Sept 4th, straight on to Roncesvalles, as Orisson is fully booked that night, really excited just hope I manage that first big walk, I'm nervous about what the road will bring both mentally and physically but hey bring it on!

Hi Lemondrizzle -
I will be leaving St Jean on August 25 - I have not heard back from Orisson so I am planning on walking through to Roncesvalles also :)
I'm a bit nervous too, but seeing that Orisson only has 18 beds - it seems like most folks walk through to Roncesvalles. I'm focusing on slow & steady to get me through.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Hey, I'll be starting the camino on the 5th of September from SJPP. Could you add me to the list please?

Huw

Hola and welcome Huw,

Add us to the list Sarah. My friend Robyn and I start walking the Camino Frances from Logroño on 17 September 2015. Hope to meet a few forum members - say Hi Kanga! if you see an old wizened up redhead wearing an Aarn pack and sandals.

Hi @Kanga have added you to the very busy September list, there's a good chance of meeting some members!
Wish I wasn't so far behind you it would be a pleasure to buy you a tinto for all your hard work on the forum.:)
