Good luck and Buen Camino, Robo.
I can understand your drive. I spent 16 months planning my Camino before I finally got underway. Thankfully I didn't get any significant injuries - my left knee gave me some trouble, I pulled a muscle in my right thigh, and I got a nasty chest cold during the last week - but I saw plenty of others who did. I heard of one woman who had broken a bone in her foot and was still trying to walk the last part from Sarria to Santiago. I don't know if she made it but, if I had been in her position, I think I may have tried to do the same thing. By the last week I couldn't countenance the idea of anything stopping me from making it to Santiago on foot.
I feel you!
My departure is 12 days from now and I've been stuck at hone for the last three weeks after suffering an ankle injury myself because I was training for the Camino a little too hard.
I could barely walk and my family told me to delay my trip until next year. Are they crazy? If I have to crawl, I will do this Camino, said I.
Happy to report that after a series of accupunture treatments I am back in the game and pain free. Although my family thinks that I am going to start in Rocenvalles instead of SJPP, so I can take it easy.... We'll see
Well Robo that is horrible news. Part of me thinks you would be smart to delay your adventure and get well. Another part of me thinks maybe you should start tomorrow before you have a chance to hurt something else. Seriously though, I am sorry for these setbacks and hope to hear soon that you are on your way.
A delayed departure would make sense, and be logical. But I'd rather go ahead as planned. To get another 2 month window of opportunity from work may never come around again...and in a way, I think these setbacks are supposed to be part of my Camino
Obviously if by the departure date I still cannot actually walk without a walking stick, (I haven't ventured out of the house in a week) or cannot even carry my pack to the plane.......I might need to rethink thingsBut I have a feeling I'll be on my way as planned
Hi Rob
Starting on the 25th as well. Look forward to seeing you.
Buen Camino
What is too much training?, I'm scare to injure myself now, preparing my trip for May 26thI feel you!

My husband and I leave on April 25 for Seville. We initially were going to do the Mozarabe from Granada to Merida, then the Madrid and then the Invierno (we like being away from the crowds). I was planning to leave the Frances until we were 'old', when we would appreciate the shorter walks. Max will turn 69 on the way.
Well... Max injured his hips - first one then the other, so has hardly been able to walk. So now we are going to start on the Frances and see what happens. Maybe only 10km a day. Maybe taxis. Maybe one day walking then one day resting. Maybe even just enjoying Spain in Camino-related areas. Whatever happens, we will enjoy it. I too have been glued to this forum and it is from here that I developed this attitude. Relax, enjoy the moment and take what comes.
Best of luck , Robbo. Maybe we will meet.
Poco a poco.
Sue (Dulwich Hill)
hi robo - i hope it will all mend and you soon shall be on your way ... all the way to santiago.
don't know what your flight arrangements are - but i hope you are able to perhaps upgrade if you not already have. it made an immense difference for long flights flying out-of-coach. it might /will ease the arrival.
keep envisioning yourself walking on the camino ... and you'll get there!!
very best wishes -
Gasp...4000$ for an upgrade... Whoa...Yes I thought about upgrading............But it's about $4,000 one way! I might just change my seat allocation to an aisle so I can get up and stretch and move around..... Normally I get a window seat, watch a movie, drink half a gallon of wine......and sleep....
And I second what Amorfati said about dazzling someone at the counter for a better seat. A smile and a gentle word can often get amazing results. Open yourself up to the possibility that even at this early stage the Camino can be working its magic.
.
Take care, Robo.
Yep! You are correct, sir!Have no fear I will! Perspectives have changed over the last week or so...... Just getting there.....and being able to walk upright.....will be good enough to start with
May I add my sympathies Robo. Get your pack carried. Pack Camino smarties. Walk short distances. Be prepared to taxi/bus/train - there is no such thing as "cheating" unless you cheat yourself! However you manage getting there you will have overcome huge difficulties and will deserve to recognize what you have achieved. Buen Camino cobber.
I'm traveling quite light anyway. 6kg. Even if I send my bag forward, I'll have to carry food, water, wet weather gear.... That will be 4kg anyway, including the pack...Play safe. Transport pack first 4 days while you test the water. I'm not quite myself physically at the moment and I will be taking it very easy myself, though I doubt I will transport my 4K.
From another Aussie to all the other Aussies, buen Camino! Mine starts at SJPDP on 5 May 2015.Hi Robo
From one Aussie to another I don't think that you are nuts. Hope to see you out there.
Buen Camino

Well, I bought my boots and starting training since end of March, I live in Florida, so no up or down hill except in the gym, where I can incline up to 7% but I have done to 5.5. I do 6-10 miles daily carrying my backpack , and resting one or two days depending on how my body is feeling.Yolanda. I do a lot of training for distance running and for walking....listen to your body, stretch, make sure that you have the right shoes for you. Get good advice on the latter. Get a little bit of fitness, you will walk into fitness as the walk goes on. There is plenty of good advice on the forum on starting easy. In the meantime start walking and SLOWLY increase distance. Add hills (don't forget the downhill as well....some of us hate this more than going up)
Buen Camino

Last night I did 10 miles, but the last 2 miles I was very tired, I'm still treating blisters. I'm just running scare, and getting very tired. I just wrote a similar treat responding to someone that is counting down to 46 nights, I'm counting down to 41 nights. thank you for your encouragement!
hi robo, good luck to you,,,its now 7 sleeps for me,,so i know how u feel. [ but for the injuries ].Sounds like you're doing fine.....
9 sleeps to go. And I haven't been able to train for a month or moreBut looking forward to it immensely and I'm just preparing to start slow. As many here have suggested, I'll use the first few days for training
good luck...enjoy12 hours to go then I fly to Biarritz and on to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to start my first Camino, now the nerves are kicking in... what have I let myself in for
burn Camino to every one.
14 sleeps for me and like every one else I am getting excited/scared see you there

I like one of our season peregrines quote" the Camino chooses us" "The Camino takes care of us", don't forget you statement also, WE,, so both of you will help and encourage the other. the Camino is not an obligation, so whenever you want to rest more than one day, then do so.We will certainly go with the grit and determination to get there. And I am sure we will be tested..........many times, in many ways. And regardless of how far we actually get, we'll be better for the experience. I just hope it's all the wayThough I am now firmly of the view that I am going for the journey, not the destination, and how far and how long that journey takes me, may not be totally up to me.
Though I shall be severely disappointed if it's not all the way
I hope you are having a great camino12 hours to go then I fly to Biarritz and on to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to start my first Camino, now the nerves are kicking in... what have I let myself in for

Robo, don't worry!
Perhaps your body was just trying to tell you to RELAX!!!
Don't worry about not having trained in a few weeks. You'll be fine.
Start out REAL SLOW. Work you way up to the pace you are hoping to walk at.
Right now, I want you to . . .
. . . Plop on the couch, put your feet up, have a glass of wine, and put your mind in a happy place.
You are in for a great adventure
Buen Camino,
Kathy
Seriously, be ready to relax and slow down or stop (temporarily) when your body insists. You want to make it all the way, don't you???
Hi Robbo and Aussie Pete...My Camino starts from SJPDP on 15 May and I am also a Peter from Australia. I wish you both buen Camino and hope we can cross pathsFrom another Aussie to all the other Aussies, buen Camino! Mine starts at SJPDP on 5 May 2015.
That is call support. One of the best things about this forum is that everyone is so positive
Buen camino, kevhan!Well, you are on the route now... And probably over the Pyrenees by now. So, well done! Hope you are taking it slowly, and enjoying every minute. Remember, it is not a marathon. It is just a very very special walk...
Sounds like the best final training plan!My training for the last 4 weeks has consisted of............ "Plop on the couch, put your feet up, have a glass of wine, and put your mind in a happy place."
A shoutout to you @Robo - knowing the long flight may have caused problems. If you need to get your bearings for a day or two SJPDP is a lovely little town. Consider the Valcarlos route if the weather is bad - or you want the option of walking part way and then getting transported to Roncesvales. My friend with physical problems walked to Arneguey and part-way to Valcarlos, then telephoned and took a taxi the rest of the way.
Though with the help of some pharmaceuticals... But I suspect I may still be taking OTC (over the counter - non prescription) medication when I start. Panadol (500 mg Paracetamol) and Nurofen (Ibuprofen 200 mg) ever 4 hours.. It dulls the backpain enough to get me moving. (I can't take the stronger Brufen because of other medical issues)
But I'm not sure if these are International 'Brands'. Are they available in Spain, or what brand should I look out for? I guess I can just take the packet to a Pharmacy and show them.... I presume these are also OTC in Spain?
.
Hi Robbo, Good luck with your challenges. I hope you can make it to SdC. I'm just interested, since you would like to make it all the way. How many days have you allowed for the pilgrimage. I leave ST j on 15th MayThanks Kanga.
I leave Sydney on 25th, ANZAC Day. So it will be an emotional day in many ways... I'll really try to take the easy options in the first few days where I can.
I have a points upgrade request in with Qantas. I'll only find out on the day of the flight. Maybe the Camino will smile on me. But regardless. I'll manage. My back is getting better. So as long as I get up and move around, and stretch, I'll be fine.
Tried a 4 km walk yesterday and all went well. My first walk in about 5 weeks I think. I just do stretches every 500 metres or so for a minute, to stretch out the Achilles. Seems to help a lot. So I'll try a few more test walks before I go. I'll aim to use the first few days on the Camino to get my legs and back working again.
Day 1 I'll only go as far as Orisson with a day pack....taking my time. Caroline will pick me up and return me to SJPDP.
The Plan for Day 2 is for Caroline to take me back up to Orisson, and take my main gear on to Roncesvalles for me. But Plans, Men, Laid, Mice etc....
If Day 1 was too much for my recovering Achilles, then I'll just ride with my pack to Roncesvalles, or maybe up to the Peak at least. We'll just see what happens.
Then I'll transport my pack another 2 or 3 days (or more) and give things a chance to settle down.
I really want to try and make it the whole distance, so being sensible the first few days might help...
My dear wife Pat suggested I postpone a weekBut what the heck, I'll just use that first week to ease into things really slowly.....
I see Caroline has posted a 'Last Minute' Transport List on her website home page. A handy guide to what is already booked that you can join.
Hi Robbo, Good luck with your challenges. I hope you can make it to SdC. I'm just interested, since you would like to make it all the way. How many days have you allowed for the pilgrimage. I leave ST j on 15th May
You are on Robbo, I will keep my eyes peeled for the telltale Mr Bean. I'm sure you will be well past Roncesvalles by the time we catch up. It will be great if we catch up an have a Pilgrim meal togetherHi Peter.
My original plan allowed extra time anyway, as I didn't want to rush. Well 'more' time than many other people anyway...
I have 46 days all up. Leaving SJPDP on 28th April. If possible I'd like to go on to Muxia. I'll just see how I go and I can jump ahead if need be.
15th May huh? My Birthday. On that day I plan to be in a nice Hotel somewhere, with a great bottle of Red Wine. I'll raise a glass to you and think of your great first day efforts
You'll quite possibly catch me up at some stage.
Of course I could also still be at Roncesvalles recovering from 'my' first day, in which case I'll shout you dinner
Do book ASAP since Orisson is very popular! You are right gapowell, I was thinking of trying to make it all the way to Roncesvalles on day 1, but maybe I start out from StJean after having a good look around first, and just head for Orisson for the first night. I suppose the pilgrims office will advise me if I should call ahead and book a bed at Orisson???
All your digital friends on the Forum hope for the best for you Robo. Stay calm and go easy. May you sense camino joy despite the pain.
Carpe diem and Buen camino!
Margaret Meredith
Starting at St Jean. But will go very slow. Plan on taking 2 days roncesvalles.Yes, go slow Robo. Where do you start from? I may have missed that, or forgot.
Anyway, you are your best doctor, react to what your body tells you.
Off you go, yahooo, Buen Camino friend!
I leave on ANZAC DayThink of the ANZACs Robo, you can bloody do it, one way or the other.
Onya, mate!
I'm thinking that I might just transport my gear every day, so as to minimise further injury. Just carry my pack pack, wet weather gear, food and water. And I'll have to stick to a regular routine of warming up, stretching, icing through the day, icing at night etc. Stretching down at night.
I'm going regardless
And if it gets so bad that I can only walk 3 kms a day and taxi the rest, then so be it. At least I'll be on the Camino soaking it all up
If a pilgrim can make it to Santiago on the vapors of good wishes, Robo, your fan club here has certainly provided enough loud and strong wishes for a wonderful Camino to you. We are looking forward to hearing about your journey. Buen camino, Laurie
happy to read you made it that far ... - marvelous. cheering for you all the way from california .... !Kind thoughts Laurie... many thanks.
I'm lying here in bed in St jean , at 3am, listening to the rain pouring down
Can't wait to get going! But a couple more hours sleep will help I think....
I am somewhat relieved to read that - I was feeling inadequate when remembering my own blogging efforts while on the camino. I was so impressed with your professional-quality posts and I wondered how you had managed that when you were jet-lagged and working on a small device in bits of spare time. However, it is a pleasure to read, so keep it up. And send my compliments to your assistant.Dictate the blog onto my phone. Email the audio and pics to my 'assistant' for transcription and posting.
BRAVO, Robo! Been thinking of you and am so glad you made it up the hill OK. Was it not glorious? Was it not harder than.....??
Take it easy down the hills in the next few days, especially into Zubiri....that one's a challenge in every way.
You can always walk down on the verges of the N135 road to Zubiri. A good place to join the N135 is after the Alto de Erro where the camino crosses the road.good advice.....
I was looking at the brieley guide, at the elevations. Tomorrow just to viskarret. Then the next day just to Zubiri. Rain is expected, so I think after the steep descent I'll take a halt...
