Dear all,
Well, here I am on the CP and I am typing this on the library computer in Ponte de Lima.

One suggestion for leaving Porto: take the metro to Araujo - some 14km or so from the cathedral.

The metro station is only 500m from the village square, where a cafe will set you up with breakfast for the day. then it is 28km pull to Rates. You get a feeling for leaving a rapidly industrialising city, a gradual move into the country and some thoughts about village conditions. I set off from Araujo at 8.30 and made it to the albergue in Rates at 2pm. All a pleasant way of starting a journey.

Off to San Roque right now

Re: A suggestion for leaving Porto--bus to Meia

I walked a couple of weeks ago from Porto. We took the bus to Meia (I think about 10 km. from Porto). The bus leaves from the Praca Aliados (if you are in the plaza with your back to the statue of the man on a horse and you are looking uphill towards the building at the top--the bus stop is on the right hand side--about halfway up or further). It is the #600 bus and has frequent departures. We got out at the "Igreja de Meia" stop but I think you could also go to the last stop in Meia. Once is Meia, look around for the city maps posted on large silver markers on the sidewalk. Follow the map to get to the zoo and church. As you near the zoo you will see the blue tiled church. At this point you will find your first yellow arrows. There were still some industrial bits on the way to Sao Pedro de Rates but it wasn't bad.
