Hi, name is Mark and I am walking from St. Jean with Kari starting the last week in April. We hope to camp much of the time and would like to ask if Camping Gaz is generally available in this part of Spain or not? Ta.

Hi. St jean is in France still and as camping gas is a french product I'm presuming they should sell it locally. I hope anyway as I am also planning to do this in July. I was gonna buy 2 tins at st jean or Toulouse where I'm starting and sending the other one ahead in the post to one of the further villages in spain

in the UK it is illegal to send gas by post: I don't know about France* or Spain but it may well be the same so worth checking before you go. Also if you're sending from France to Spain that'll have international postage implications too.

* update - it's illegal there too, http://www.colissimo.fr/particuliers/Ai ... ontenu.jsp and section 4.4.1 of http://www.colissimo.fr/particulier...ITIONSGENERALESDEVENTECOURRIERCOLIS011011.pdf

This fall, I e-mailed the tourist information in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port and asked them if it was possible to buy 100 or 200gr gas containers in St-Jean. They answered that it is available. Apparently, there is (at least) one very good outdoor store with all the hiking gear you would ever need there. If you want to restock in Spain and would like to make sure in advance, you could try googling the tourist info in Burgos or Léon, and then e-mail them to ask a similar question. Worked for me! :D

the simple answer is yes.
thousands of people walk the Camino in Spain, every large town along the way has at least one place that supplies everything that a walking/hiking/camping pilgrim could ever need, and why wouldn't it after all it is a large European country and not outer Mongolia

I bought camping gas in St Jean. There are a couple of outdoor stores that sell it there. Its usually Colemans gas they sell. I had to buy a new cooker as the same time because the one I brought with me wasn't compatiable with the Colemans gas, so be aware of that also.

There are plenty of places to buy gas along the way in the larger places so theres no need to carry too much with you from the start (which was another mistake I made).

One can usually lasted over two weeks for me and I camped nearly every night!

Which type of stove did you need. I've got e screw fit stove

Screw-fits are rare in France, perhaps Spain too. I can never find gas cans to fit my MSR pocket rocket in France and always need to use a bulkier stove that fits the blue coleman(?) cans they have there.

hi all!

really found this info to much help since i will be bringing my ultralight stove with me Primus ETa Express (only 420 grams of weight from Swedish brand Primus). though this stove comes with the screw-on arrangement, so is it possible to find suitable gas canisters that will work?

AND where exactly are these outdoor shops in SJPP located (don´t remember I saw one the last time I passed there)???

thank you for all help that could be given,

Jonas

you're getting some slightly conflicting experiences here, but they may get clarified in the next few posts! I failed to find any screw top canisters to fit my stove on the first couple of weeks on the Via de la Plata in 2010 and then gave up. But I did notice then and subsequently that quite a few Spanish hardware stores sell a green coloured version of the french top-piercing camping gaz cylinder (for brazing torches).
I think you may struggle to find screw type gas cylinders except in a specialist hiking store in a city. But maybe this place in SJPdP really does have the lot. I'd either try and get confirmation that they do have the screw fit cylinders there or else leave your outfit at home and buy a cheapo camping gaz rig and pan in SJPdP
cheers, tom

All sounds pretty heavy... Try Eroski. Pamplona, Najera, Logrono etc.
