bordeaux to Hendaye or Irun

Hi looks like i will be flying into bordeaux and the flying day take the train to Irun. I am wondering if it is best to get out in hendaye and walk across the bridge. how far is this. I remember it being mentioned that it is best to walk across the bridge.
