@Gueza - sometimes monasteries only allow women The term monastery is derived from the same Greek word 'monazein' as monasticism and means to 'dwell alone'. It relates to both monks and nuns who live a contemplative life and who are cloistered (shut off from the world -> living along). It is a common misconception that monasteries are for monks and convents are for nuns.
