I was looking through my VF photos today and I remembered that I had intended to comment on the positive experience I had when I went to the Cathedral in July to pick up my credential. I arrived on a Saturday afternoon and there were about 20 people in line to pay to enter the Cathedral grounds. There was a young man at the entrance explaining to everyone that certain sections of the Cathedral were closed unless you were planning on attending the service. When I got to the front of the line, I asked him where I could acquire the credential. He looked at me somewhat surprised and said "Oh, are you a Pilgrim"? I made a split-second decision not to get into the whole discussion about "What does it really mean to be a Pilgrim", so I simply said "Yes."
He immediately left his post at the entrance and escorted me to the information kiosk, where he introduced me to the lady in the kiosk as a Pilgrim, bade me a safe journey, and then hustled back to the entrance. The lady in the kiosk was equally engaging, pointing out the stone that marks the "official" start of the VF, asking me where I was from, saying how fortunate I was to be starting out, and just generally making me feel a little special. I was a little bit embarrassed to say that I was only going as far as Arras, but it did not seem to matter to her.
It was a very nice way to start out, so thanks to those involved!
