Rough translation of a nice little story, with a lovely graphic to accompany it (from our local Portuguese online news):
"The Municipality of Sardoal was invited to participate in a worldwide initiative to create flower carpets on the occasion of the Holy Jacobean Year in Santiago de Compostela, due to the strong tradition that the municipality has in the elaboration of these ephemeral works inside chapels and churches on the occasion of Holy Week and Easter.
"The parish of Santiago de Montalegre in the municipality of Sardoal, whose Church is dedicated to Santiago, was the place chosen for the realization of the carpet, on the 22nd of July, being open to the public on the 23rd from 15:00 to 17:00, 24 from 11 am to 12 pm and from 3 pm to 5 pm. A group of parishioners from this parish will participate in its creation--those, who, on the occasion of Easter, prepared the floral carpets with the collaboration of municipal officials.
"More than 310 locations from 30 countries will be part of the initiative: Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, France, Finland, United States, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Hungary, India, Italy, Lithuania , Mexico, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Paraguay, Poland, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Tunisia, Uruguay, Venezuela and Spain.
"It should be noted that this initiative is being carried out for the second year in a row, after Pope Francis declared that, in addition to 2021, 2022 would also be a Jubilee Year in Santiago de Compostela, an extension resulting from the pandemic.
"It was Pope Callixtus II who established the Jacobean Holy Year in 1126, to be celebrated whenever July 25, St. James' Day, coincided with a Sunday. The Catholic Church promised forgiveness of all sins to anyone who pilgrimaged to the Apostle's tomb on this occasion, which became known as "winning the Jubilee".
