Churches Opening in Castilla y Leon!

Many, various, and continuing.
Good news from Castilla y Leon for people who love to look inside churches!

According to our mayor, rural churches within the province will be given a grant for maintenance if the townspeople can keep the church doors open and the facility attended through six hours of each day. The plan starts on June 13 and continues through mid-September.

Attendants are NOT expected to offer tours through the church: only to count the visitors, smile nicely, and keep an eye on things.

Keeping the church open during summer days, especially during fiesta and harvest seasons, is not easily done, and visitors shouldn´t expect an open church in every town. Still, Moratinos seems to be embracing the idea, even with only eight resident families available to take the shifts. I plan to make a lot of trips all over and visit all kinds of places on my days off!

Rejoice greatly

Once again, many of the churches along the Camino de Santiago in Castilla y Leon province (which includes Burgos, Palencia, and Leon) are OPEN every day but Monday for pilgrims and other visitors.

The program runs July through mid-September. The churches are staffed by local volunteers, so be extra nice to that lady or gentleman at the door!
