Ciberbus to roam the Camino this summer

Castilla y Leon is funding a 'ciberbus' with 18 internet-connected PCs during the summer months. This is not only for use by the locals in villages too small to have their own access point, but will also be available for pilgrims. Supposedly high-powered enough to enable videoconferencing, which opens interesting possibilities for those who simply can't leave technology behind.

I don't know if this is a good idea ... Isn't one of the reasons to do the Camino to take a break from your usual life?

On the other hand, if they're not too obvious and not all-around, then it's perhaps nice to use them once in a while ... The less commercial, the better, I guess. No?

it's not commercial at all: access is free, funded by the regional government.

And a primary purpose is to help the locals. Though some people may find it hard to believe, the locals are not there solely as a backdrop for a walk

Cyberbus

For those who have not walked the camino yet, you will be delighted to find all sorts of services on wheels to rural places.
There is the Baker-man who drives his van from village to village selling and delivering breads, pastries etc.
There is the butcher-van that delivers and sells meat products to small villages.
There is a vegetable and fruit van that stops, opens the back doors and starts weighing and selling strawberries, grapes, oranges, cherries etc from his van.
There is also the fish-van.
There is nothing nicer than to queue up with the locals to buy fresh fruit or bread in a tiny, almost abandoned village.
The cybervan will be a welcome addition to those communities who are off the beaten track.

As you may (or may not know) I live about 15 minutes outside Santiago in an old stone house that we are restoring (almost done). We have each day a choice of two bakers that drops off bread, you hang a bag on your door and he know what bread we like... it is like subscribing to the paper. Also, twice a week we get the fish truck and meat truck.... and then once (or twice, don't remember) we get the "grocery store" truck... it has the basics from the store.

When they enter our little pueblo, they push-and-hold the horn on the car to let us know that "I'm here!", and then people go out.

It's great!

Cybervan

It sounds charming Ivar!

Perhaps you must give us an address to which we can all post a little flag of our country so that you will have an international board of flags for all the pilgrims who visit your 'cyber albergue'!

Well, let me surprise you and tell you that this feature is already built into this "ciber alberge".

If you would like to add the flag of your country (in these World Cup days) next to your posts in the forum, here is what you do:

1) Click the "Profile" button at the top of this page.
2) Scroll down to the bottom where it says "Avatar control panel"
3) Where it says "Select Avatar from gallery:", click "Show Gallery"
4) Select your flag and remember to press the "Select Avatar" button at the bottom to save.

... if you can't find your flag, e-mail it to me and I will make it available.

And, for the record (since Norway did not qualify), Go Sweden and Go España!

Delivery

You know, it wasn't THAT long ago (well, maybe it was) that we had this type of delivery in, guess where? Los Angeles, California! Yup. When I was a girl, we had a milkman, a breadman, a meat man, and a vegetable man, and gosh, don't forget the ice cream man! All of them made weekly rounds in their vans, with their various whistles and horns.

Seems like life was slower and better then....

Does this mean I'm getting old?
