Hello fellow Pilgrims
I have just been diagnosed with Coeliac disease and am planning to walk the Portuguese route from Porto in August this year.
My question is obviously about food and being able to have a gluten free diet. How easy is this likely to be? Any one else in a similar situation - any and all advice welcome please.
Thanking you all in advance
Jane

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I'm in the same position as you.

Taking into account that simple unaltered meats, dairy products, fish, fruit, vegetables and nuts are all ok (well, for me anyway), we still have a wide choice.

I'm fairly confident that with a bit of care I'll be ok, even if it means carrying a little extra weight, or, as a very last resort eating only what I can find in supermarkets etc.

All that said, I have to say that my reactions to gluten are not as severe as some people experience.

Buen (food-filled) Camino

Mspath,

How do you refer to a thread like you do? Do you just open it, click on where its title appears on the top and cut and paste?

Yes. I open it on my smartphone,
save the link in the phone browser and then reopen the thread/post to which I add the link from the browser.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I have no expertise in this, but I can disclose the experience of a wonderful pilgrim I walked a few days with. Based on what she told me, a lot depends on how bad your disease or allergy is. She had an extreme gluten allergy, and didn't go into restaurants at all. Even gluten-free items would be cross-contaminated from kitchens that used gluten. Her options were tinned fish, nuts, fruits, etc. from groceries. That said, many "gluten-free" eaters don't seem to be as sensitive. You need to learn and do what's right for your individual needs. Good luck and burn camino!

Thank you JohnMcM - all information is greatly accepted and read and digested I unfortunately am one of those that have quite spectacular reactions to gluten so need to be very careful. I will be learning to read labels in Portuguese
