Dear Pilgrims,

I would like to ask you about cooking throughout the Camino. It is possible cook in every albergue or refugios. Is cooker ordinar facilities? I will not able to take the gas-burner in the aircraft and I do not know If I will able to buy some in Astorga or Ponferrada.

Thanks

Hello,
Further to what Johnnie said - you can often cook - but not always. On the times when there are no cooking facilities available, you usually have several alternatives: you can always go to the grocery store and buy food for a cold meal (bread, cheeses, canned tuna, fresh vegetables and fruit etc.) or you can go to a bar and buy some tortilla (usually baked eggs and potatoes) for a couple of pesos or you can buy the menu del dia which is a three course meal for about 8 or 9 pesos.

There is no reason to take a gas burner. You can cook in most alburgues, and like someone said, where you cannot cook, you can buy dinner. I promise you if you take a gas burner, you'll be mailing it home within one week... or dumping it.

You will want to pick up an inexpensive sharp knife at the beginning of the trip... I found one at the hardware store for $3 Euro that I used all trip long.

Very nice kitchens in Galacia but NO pots and pans or utensils. Otherwise we cooked wherever we could. Some alberques have no kitchens. If cooking is important, you might want to look up those that have kitchens.
