Couples on the Camino?

Hello All,

My boyfriend Andrew and I are beginning the Camino de Santiago next Wednesday in St Jean Pied de Port, and we were curious as to whether or not we will be able to sleep in the same bed at the refugios. Does anyone know what the story is with couples on the Camino?

Thanks!

To be honest, I don't think that you would want to sleep in the same bed. If you are in a municipal albergue, the the beds are slimmer than a normal sized single bed. Even if you were pencil thin, I couldn't imagine two people having a good nights sleep in one of those. In any case, in a municipal albergue, you are charged on a one person per bunk basis. My boyfriend and I both have good jobs and so didn't have to 'slum it'. We stayed in albergues where you could get a two person room (of course, it helps to speak Spanish so that you can ask if they have one of these kicking about). In the places with dormitories, we simply stayed in private albergues or hotels with double or twin rooms (of course, you pay more for this). No one really bothered to ask us if we were married. Any of the church based refugios (who might care about your marital status) will be quite spartan an will only have bunks in dorms.

Hi,

There's a lot of albergues with "couples of beds", not for couples but where you can sleep one beside the other.

And, there's some albergues where some rooms has just two beds: For example, Salamanca, Astorga (in times it was a convent) or the new albergue in HerbĂłn, near Padron.

I hope you've enjoyed your Camino.
