Covadonga?

When in September 2024 I resume my del Norte walk I will be starting again in the Village of Naves, Asturia I'm considering a side trip via GR 105 from the Norte just past Villaviciosa to Covadonga in the Picos Europa. Has anyone done this? If so, how was it? Not being a Pilgrimage rout I wonder about the existence of much Pilgrim type infrastructure. Once there I would probably take a bus back to Villaviciosa and resume the del Norte. On one of my Norte walks I took a bus from Gijon to Oviedo and spent time in the city and visited the incredible Naranco World Heritage site. Spaniards I met there told me that I really should visit Covadonga on one of my visits to Spain. According to my maps it should be about a three or four day walk.

Covadonga is one of the most amazing places in Spain, the chapel set into the mountain where apparently Pelayo and his men prayed before defeating the Moors is one of the most amazing things you will see.
But, go not on a weekend, or any other popular time as it can get busy.

Yes go! It’s fantastic! We took the bus from Covadonga up to the top of the mountain to the lakes and walked around the old mine for the day. Chapel inside the mountain is amazing. We stayed in the chateau.

Way back in 2013 we planned to walk the GR105 route from LLanes, but instead walked the Camino de la Reina picking the way-marks up from Arriondas. We took the FEVE from Llanes to Arriondas. The route from there was good. You can see our stages on our blog at Walking Around: June 2013 . Arriondas was well served by both the FEVE and also ALSA at the time.

Thank you for this. Since I will be staying near Ribadesella for three of four days to wander around on the GR9 and walk the coast and watch Bufones, I may try and find a way to walk directly from there to Arriondas and not head west on the Norte to Villaviciosa.
