Well after getting the idea to do this over 2 years ago, My May 23rd departure date is right around the corner. I find myself starting to obssess over the stupidest things. So thank you all for this forum. It helps to calm me down. One of my latest questions is the number of hours of daylight. Being it is north I would think that it would get dark pretty late and then recently read there is only something like 7 hours of daylight. That seems wrong??? Being a girl traveling alone I think it helps me to know I will always land somewhere while it is still light out.
Oh and one other thing... I am going to starting in Roncesvalle. I will be taking that 6pm bus from Pamplona. Do I get my passport in the evening upon arrival? Is the place that gives them out still open at that hour? Am I better off getting a taxi from Pamplona earlier in the day?

In late May to early June you should not worry about the number of daylight hours, you'll have plenty of it. The sun should be up by 7AM; sunset way past 9 PM. There's a webiste somewhere that tells you the time of sunrise and sunset in Spain in May and June.

If you arrive in Roncesvalles after 6 PM then the vast majority of pilgrims from SJPP must have already 'checked in' the 100-bed refugio. Perhaps other people in the forum can give you an idea how many pilgrims will be arriving in Roncesvalles in the last week of May. The pilgrim office opens at around 4PM. I'm not sure what time it closes.

Daylight hours

There is a website that will work out your daily mileage, progressive mileage, and sunrise and sunset, percentage of lunar illumination and give you a downloadable profile of your route.

For those who are not familiar with the website, this is how it works:

1) Log on to http://www.godesalco.com/plan
2) Click on the route you have chosen - eg: Camino Santiago (starting at Roncesvalles)
3) Click on the LEFT side circle at Roncesvalles then scroll down to Santiago and click on the RIGHT side circle. Then click on "Send this form"
4) Tick the boxes at the places you are aiming for each day. A mileage will appear next to that village.
5) Click on sunrise to sunset - or - dawn to dusk and then on "Send this form"
6) On the next page you can choose one or all of the downloads to print out.

The profile maps are excellent to print out and the last option, the spreadsheet, will tell you the longest stage, shortest stage, total disantce, average km per day etc.
If anyone is interested in a 36 day, average 21km per day spreadsheet let me know and I will send it to you.
