Deaf pilgrims?

I'm wondering if there are any other Deaf pilgrims out there? Past, present, or future? Or if anyone has met Deaf on el Camino?

Hi Tashi,

Hmmm... can't remember seeing anything written online about deaf pilgrims. I remember I found an article about 6 blind pilgrim walking from Santiago to Muxia:

... but with all the pilgrims arriving to Santiago each year, I am sure there are some deaf as well...

Deaf Pilgrims

I walked with a deaf person in September 2006. He did fine . . . but, in many areas the Camino/road/trail is very narrow and he would step out infront of cars, motorcycles and bicycles, not hearing them.

He got hit once by a bike passing him. We did not what that to happen again, espically with a car. So. One of us started walking behind him in the towns to keep him safe. More than onece I used my walking stick to push him back to the side to avoid being hit.

Other deaf people may be more aware, however. Just my experience on the Camino.

I never met any deaf pilgrims on the camino, however I met one blind guy who was walking with a group, (he made it to santiago faster than me) and one child on a wheelchair being helped by his family.

It brings my return journey home to mind. I had never been to Lourdes so we stopped there on the way home after the Camino. I am not religious and I found it quite an amazing sight. I felt very grateful to be me when leaving there. So many people were there wanting a change in their circumstances, and I had gotten one by just walking every day for a month.

Additionally I have colitis and before walking the first time I was worried how I would be. Surpring to me my health had never been better, after a few days.
